Free Family Zumba/Zumba Familiar Gratis!!!

Zumba event kicks off Rethink Your Drink campaign 08/24/2018

On Wednesday evening, the American Heart Association and Southwest Solutions hosted a special Zumba event to help launch the campaign. The campaign encourages people to switch to healthier drinks and avoid soda and other beverages that are high in sugar and calories. About 60 participants took part in the Zumba class led by instructor Leticia De La Torre, and they received free t-shirts about the campaign and taking control of what you consume for your own well-being. The event took place in the former Third Precinct building, which Southwest Solutions renovated and repurposed. The next event in is Family Movie Night, featuring the animated movie "Coco," on September 7.

Wrapping up the first ever participatory budgeting, We Decide Detroit, process in the City!!!! Over the past 5 months, residents worked hard to collect over 500 ideas from the neighborhood. Those ideas were then developed and narrowed down to the top 16. Over the past 3 weeks we have been collecting votes!
Today the votes were tallied and the top winning projects announced.
Over 600 people voted, 625 exactly! This process allowed everyone in the target neighborhood to vote, regardless of age, immigration status or if they were registered voters. Democracy at its best 🙌🏾 The winning projects were:
1) Sip, Sit, Eat, Listen for benches, picnic tables, water fountains, trash cans & speakers in Clark Park

2) The Chill Zone: rehabbing a gazebo in the park for youth to use as a hangout spot after school.

3) ADA Park: for a park that is accessible & inclusive for kids with multiple & diverse abilities.
We hope the City will adopt this approach towards planning and development and to expand it citywide.
Huge shoutout and thanks to all of the residents who volunteered their time to pilot this in Detroit! And to Invest Detroit go stepping up to support PB & donating the funds for the projects.
