Pride is not just a moment, but a movement.

Here at LGBT Detroit, we advocate for the freedom, visibility, and joy of our LGBT+ community all year long. What began as a protest at Stonewall has grown into a worldwide celebration of how far we have come as LGBT+ people, while reminding us that the fight for equality, justice, and liberation continues.

Join LGBT Detroit as we celebrate Pride Month by marching with us in the Motor City Pride Parade on Sunday, June 7, and continue the celebration at Detroit’s longest-running Black LGBT+ Pride, Hotter Than July, taking place July 23–26.

Support Pride 365.

"The first Pride was a protest." In this clip from LGBT Detroit Live, we discuss how court decisions have changed the Voting Rights Act over time and what that means for communities fighting to make their voices heard. As we head into Hotter Than July — the nation's longest-running Black Pride celebration — we're reminded that progress doesn't happen by accident. Every right that exists today came from people willing to organize, speak up, and demand change. The conversation isn't just about history. It's about what comes next.

Wait a minute... are we sleeping on Sam? 👀🖖🏾

During our Black Nerds in Space conversation, Nzinga from and Kienuwa from helped us unpack why Sam might be one of the most fascinating characters in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.

What starts as a conversation about a hologram quickly becomes a discussion about identity, personhood, and some classic Star Trek questions that have been around for decades.

And honestly? The more we talked about it, the more interesting Sam became.

This week on LGBT Detroit Live, we sat down with Nzinga from and Kienuwa from Vault of Midnight for a conversation that went WAY beyond just “geek culture.”

We talked:
 Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
 The new comic series
 Scavengers Reign
 Black representation in science fiction
What it means to see ourselves in the future
The history of Black fandom and blerd culture
And why “Black people in space” actually matters

Somewhere between hot takes, laughter, existential sci-fi discussions, and debates about which characters deserved better… this turned into one of the most fun conversations we’ve had in a minute

Because being Black and nerdy isn’t niche anymore. It’s culture.

Which sci-fi character deserved better?

This Friday on LGBT Detroit Live, we’re diving into Star Trek, comic books, fandom, representation, and the characters who had the story, the struggle, and the potential… but maybe not the ending they deserved.

Join and with special guests Nzinga from and Kienuwa from for a fun, thoughtful, and probably very opinionated conversation.

Palmer Park is one of Detroit’s greatest natural treasures, and continues to blossom through deeper investments in beautifying the space , new programming, and greater public accessibility. Recently, Palmer Park has gained even greater attention through the Welcome Back Home Palmer Park events, a college themed celebration reconnecting a new generation of young adults to the wonder and energy of this historic space.

At the same time, these events have sparked deeper conversations around Palmer Park’s vast history, especially its longstanding connection to Detroit’s Black LGBT+ community. In this retrospective, we take a brief look at why the interconnected ties between Palmer Park, Detroit Black LGBT+ Pride, and Hotter Than July are so significant, not only in understanding the past of this Detroit landmark, but also in preserving its future for generations to come.

After checking out this nostalgic flashback on Black LGBT+ Pride in Palmer Park, share your favorite Hotter Than July memories so we can continue honoring the legacy of this community treasure at hotterthanjuly.org or in the comments below.
