“The common misconception adults have with my generation is that we’re lazy, but in reality we just need to see what the purpose is of what we’re doing”.

In this State of the Youth spotlight, Marvin Randolph, a senior at Detroit Edison Public School Academy, challenges the misconception about his generation and shares why purpose matters.

Through Mayor Mary Sheffield’s State of the Youth initiative, the City of Detroit is connecting students with opportunities, elevating youth voices and creating space for young people to help shape the city’s future.

Civic 101: Executive Directive. 💜

Everyone deserves to feel safe and know where to turn for support. On October 8, Mayor Mary Sheffield signed an executive directive strengthening Detroit’s response to domestic violence through expanded prevention efforts, workplace resources, community awareness and improved access to support.

Because protecting our residents means making sure help is accessible, resources are available, and no one has to navigate this alone.

Detroit’s riverfront is poised for a historic transformation!

The City of Detroit welcomes a landmark commitment from Dan Gilbert, pledging $1 billion in development capital to reimagine the iconic Renaissance Center and surrounding 35-acre east riverfront district.

This vision goes beyond redevelopment. Plans include affordable housing, dedicated space for Detroit-based small businesses, and 18 acres of publicly accessible civic space. The project is anticipated to create more than 8,000 construction jobs and 2,600 permanent jobs, generate $3.03 billion in visitor spending.

With all surplus proceeds invested back into the community, this initiative puts Detroiters at the heart of a new chapter for our waterfront. A stronger riverfront means new opportunities, greater economic growth, and a destination for generations to come.
