It’s time to plan your summer 250th Nation’s Birthday celebrations. What better way to spend a Tuesday thanking our beloved 1% of American active duty, veterans, family members, and Gold Star families?

Yesterday, our nation bid farewell to not only a legend, but a man of kindness, humility, and gentlemanly character. As a volunteer for EAA Warbirds at an annual Oshkosh air show, one of my duties was to es**rt Col. Anderson. I was responsible for making sure he was hydrated during his book autograph signing. He could have just thanked me and left for more pressing engagements. Instead, he sat with me in that little 10’ x 10’ tent for over an hour. He shared stories about him and Chuck Yeager during WWII. He shared his thoughts about sitting in that small P-51 during combat. I got to hear from a hero his excitement, his fear, and tales of engaging enemy aircraft that wished him death. I wasn’t watching a WWII movie with John Wayne; I was sitting with Col. Bud Anderson chatting casually about real experiences most of us read about only in books. Thank you, Col., for my freedoms, liberties, and rights.
