On January 23rd-24th, 1895, the cornerstone ceremonies of the first Detroit Masonic Temple took place. Located at First and Lafayette, it was designed by Mason & Rice. This 140 foot tall red brick Romanesque Revival building was Detroit's first purpose built Masonic building, and served the needs of the Fraternity from 1895 to roughly 1907. With rapidly expanding membership, the building became obsolete, and in April 1919 the decision was made to build the much larger Detroit Masonic Temple we know today.
Demolished in January 1936, the cornerstone is displayed in the 4th floor lobby.
