After an absolutely brutal 21 hours on the house floor, the legislature has finally adopted the State budget.

We were able to secure some wins for the district as well as some policy changes that will benefit each city.

I’ll be doing a follow up post later on with more detailed information. For now, it’s time to get some rest.

It was a pleasure to participate in a town hall this week along with other local leaders and city staff.

I was able to provide a legislative update, answer several questions and present a tribute to Brenda Sattler, a local author.

Just look at the current state of the Middle Rouge River. It’s terrible.

My staff and I have identified almost a dozen spots like this along the Middle Rouge River where there's heavy log jams and heavy trash buildup.

Algae formed among the plastic waste, treated lumber and who knows what. This is all taking place within a few feet of our natural wildlife and endangered species.

This happens due to excessive rainfall and unstable levels of the river as well as an overall lack of maintenance and planning.

These log jams also pose a major flooding risk for our basements and local roads. Hines Drive is also closed many times throughout the year for this reason.

We should look at the City of Wayne and what they’ve done with a separate branch of the Rouge River as an example. The lower rouge river is cleared of log jams, trash and you can kayak for miles toward the Detroit River.

Flooding issues have also been mitigated through the City of Dearborn and Dearborn Hts due to their efforts.

We are asking for a few volunteers who are willing to help in any way they can. We are planning a date and we're working with several people/groups to form an assembly line and haul everything out that’s possible.

Please message me if you’re interested in being a part of this.
