CR4123 (Sandpit Road) CLOSURE!!!

10/06/2026

The Burn Ban has expired and the signs are being reversed at this time.

Again, the emergency order (burn ban) that was issued last Tuesday has expired. That order was issued by the County Judge and was only good for seven days.

The request to continue the burn ban was not on today’s agenda, however it will be a consideration and an agenda item on Tuesday October 13th.

Nevertheless, extreme caution should be taken when performing outdoor burning.

If you have any questions you can call my office 409-746-3935.

Thanks Commissioner Powell

Update on Historical Photos for Deweyville Annex & Senior Center!

Ms. Shirley and Mr. Larry are the main contacts for picture review.

To date photocopies are restored though the first phase. Time consuming reviews and edits are then required for each photo.

Once reviews are complete the unidentified pictures will be sent to Ms. Shirley and Mr. Larry.

Mr. Williams will contact community members to identify places and people within the photos if possible.

Information obtained through this step will be sent to the Historical Society to be included with the original pictures and for archival records.

Once a photo has all process points met it will be emailed to Ms. Shirley and Mr. Larry.

This enables the photos to be available for printing and display in the Annex & Senior Center, and also provides restored copies for future uses.

Again, all the pictures in possession of NCHC are being processed. This includes the first and second grouping donated by Mr. Williams.

Project Update.

We set two culverts today and leveled the intersection. We also began the ditch work, however the ditch edges are not slopped at the desired degree at this present time.

We continue the work in the morning and likely be there throughout next week.

DUMPING UPDATE!!!

I recently shared an illegal dumping incident that occurred on CR4123, this is a follow up report on that violation.

After returning from the legislative conference I visited the roadside and found additional evidence that highlighted a “different” possible cause of the dumping.

We followed up on the evidence and here is the conclusion:

Some residents in Louisiana rented a dumpster for a home remodel. Their neighbors also placed trash in the dumpster with permission of the person who rented the dumpster. Multiple names is actually what helped us get to the root cause and culprit.

When the dumpster was picked up by the rental company it was taken to the landfill off Hwy 87 in Newton County. The load was NOT PROPERLY SECURED, and during transport the contents spilled out onto CR4123.

This “spillage” is still hard to understand due to the weight and size of the materials.

I have spoke with the owner of the Company who is responsible for the violation. He has provided assurance that this will not happen again. The driver went to Merryville after leaving the waste site and didn’t return on CR4123, passing the debris on CR4123.

I appreciate the residents in the Louisiana community helping us get to the bottom of this incident. The person who rented the dumpster and I had a positive conversation about the “cradle to grave” ownership of garbage.

I don’t want this message to diminish the responsibility that we are all responsible for our garbage and must ensure compliance with state laws.

Additionally, I appreciate the business owner taking responsibility and adopting measures to prevent a reoccurrence of the incident. Because of his response, I will not share the identity of his business; this is done!

Lastly, thanks to Sheriff Colton Havard and his team for their response and support throughout the investigation.
