First off, huge apologies for the radio silence. It has taken a solid three days, multiple gallons of hydration, and maximum air conditioning to regain enough brainpower to type this.
If you saw us out and about over the holiday weekend and thought, "Wow, they look like they are actively melting," you were correct. Here is the official, chaotic breakdown of our marathon weekend:
Friday the 3rd (The Great Meltdown): We kicked things off with our annual Boot Drive. To say it was hot is an understatement. The asphalt was actively trying to weld itself to our boots, and we're pretty sure a couple of us left our souls out on the pavement. A massive shoutout to the program advisors and the brave junior who helped out—you deserve a medal, or at least a lifetime supply of ice cream.
Friday Night (The Human Heat Lamps): Right after baking in the sun all day, we went straight into the fireworks standby. Every single one of our juniors stepped up to participate, which was awesome. There is a special kind of magic in standing in a field watching things explode while your body is still radiating daytime heat like a cast-iron woodstove.
July 4th (Trickery & Tradition): Parade day! Huge shoutout to the juniors for jumping right on the department's antique hand tub. We successfully convinced them that operating a 19th-century manual water pump was a "cool history lesson" and absolutely not a clever trick to get them to do heavy manual labor. They crushed it, even if their triceps will never be the same.
Sunday (The Collective Coma): Sunday was strictly reserved for lying completely motionless in a dark room, questioning our life choices, and listening to the sweet, sweet hum of the fan. Movement was legally prohibited.
Monday (The Ultimate Reward): How do you celebrate surviving a weekend inside a literal pizza oven? By gathering at the station for our monthly department meeting, of course! Because nothing caps off a holiday weekend quite like equipment checks.
The Moral of the Story: Through all the sweat, heat, and manual labor, we had a blast. As always, we deeply, deeply appreciate the incredible community support. Thanks for keeping us going, Dexter! Stay cool out there!
