🔥 BUILDING THE PIPELINE
As we enter our sixth year of partnership with Southwest Area CTE, it’s pretty incredible to look back at how far this program has come.
What started with high school students earning Firefighter I and Haz-Mat Awareness and Operations certifications has continued to grow and evolve. Six years later, students now have opportunities in Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Introduction to Emergency Services, and EMT-Basic.
Even better, all of these courses are dual credited through Dickinson State University, allowing students to earn high school and college credit while gaining certifications and hands-on experience in the fire service and EMS.
But the bigger story isn’t the number of classes, certifications, or college credits.
It’s the pipeline.
One of the biggest challenges facing the fire service and EMS in southwest North Dakota isn’t simply recruitment. It’s getting young people interested in these careers early enough to build the next generation of firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics.
That’s exactly what this partnership is doing.
Students aren’t just hearing about careers in public safety. They’re in the firehouse. They’re wearing the gear. They’re pulling hose, throwing ladders, learning patient care, solving problems, and getting a firsthand look at what it means to serve their community.
And we’re glad to see programs like this popping up across North Dakota. The fire service needs a strong pipeline everywhere, and giving high school students across the state an opportunity to experience the job firsthand is a big step toward building the next generation of firefighters and EMS professionals.
This week marked our first skills day of the 2026-27 school year, and another group of students took their first steps into the fire service.
Six years in, we’re proud of how far this partnership has come, and even more excited about where it’s going.
It’s not just about recruitment. We’re building the pipeline.
