Mr. A’s Minute: Episode XXI, Part IV: The Miracle on Ice

This week on Mr. A’s Minute, we’re continuing our series on American comebacks with the 1980 U.S. Men’s Hockey Team’s upset victory over the Soviet Union. Through hard work, determination and belief, the Americans defeated some of the most talented players in the world and became a symbol of hope for many suffering under the scourge of communist Russia.

Major property tax reform is hard to come by at the Capitol, so I’ve proposed simple, common-sense legislation with PA State Rep. Tim O'Neal that would ensure that extreme tax increases have to be approved by the taxpayers, not bureaucrats in Harrisburg.

I recently joined PA State Rep. Tim O'Neal in introducing legislation that would prohibit extreme property tax increases without voter approval. Under my proposal, if a school board wishes to increase taxes beyond the Act 1 index calculated annually by the Department of Education, it would be required to place the proposed increase before the voters of the school district. The government would no longer have authority to approve an increase above the index, that power instead rests with the people it should belong to: the voters.

Mr. A’s Minute: Episode XXI, Part III: A Line in the Sand

On this week’s Mr. A’s Minute, we’re continuing our series on American Comebacks with the Korean War. The Korean War was of interest to the United States because of its efforts to contain the spread of communism. Until U.S. entrance into the war, communist North Korea had pushed South Korea to the brink. With the help of Douglas MacArthur and the Americans, South Korea was able to push back North Korean forces, preserve its territory, and contain the spread of communism.

Medicare’s annual open enrollment period is underway, and the Pennsylvania Department of Aging (PDA) is reminding people they can receive free, unbiased help understanding their options by talking with specially trained Pennsylvania Medicare Education and Decision Insight (PA MEDI) counselors.

PA MEDI counselors can help older adults make informed health insurance decisions that best fit their needs and budgets. They can also determine if an older adult may be eligible for any of Pennsylvania’s Medicare cost-savings programs, such as PACE/PACENET or Extra Help. The counselors do not sell insurance products, nor do they endorse or recommend any insurance company, product or agent.

Call the York County Agency on Aging at 717-771-9610 or locate a PA MEDI event in your area by visiting the Pennsylvania Department of Aging’s website. More information is available by calling the toll-free PA MEDI helpline at 1-800-783-7067 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Medicare Open Enrollment lasts until Monday, Dec. 7.
