On Oct. 8, 1871, the Great Michigan Fire swept across portions of the state, destroying communities including Holland, Manistee and areas of Michigan's Thumb. Happening at the same time as the more widely known , the disaster remains among the deadliest wildfires in Michigan history.

Today, it serves as a reminder that emergencies can happen with little warning. Take time to build an emergency kit, create an evacuation plan and stay informed about potential hazards in your area.

If you're near Manistee, visit the historical marker at Orchard Beach State Park, which commemorates those affected by the fire. Historic newspaper photos are provided by Holland Museum.
