Teen Choice peer leaders recently participated in the Starlight Park "Out of the Darkness Walk" to support Su***de Prevention Awareness. By joining the walk, these young leaders helped raise vital awareness in breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and show local youth that they are never alone. The Teen Choice program serves over 2,000 students across more than 32 middle and high schools and combines classroom health education with small-group discussions and individual counseling.

A big congratulations to our partners and neighbors at Urban Pathways! Today, CEO Gary P. Jenkins and his team hosted their first Legislative Breakfast in the Bronx, bringing together city and state leaders to talk about the future of Safe Havens and how to help more New Yorkers find a path home.

We’re proud to work alongside Urban Pathways and to share a Bronx home with such a dedicated team. Congratulations on a milestone morning!

Schools may be the first places where we see a young person struggling, but they should not be the only place where we respond.
In a new op-ed for New York Amsterdam News, Deborah Giordano, VP of our Inwood House division, and Warren Kent , SVP for community-based services, make the case for mental health support that doesn't end at the school bell. They see a clear gap. Three-quarters of New York City public schools do not meet the recommended staffing ratio for social workers.
Their answer? A continuum of care that reaches youth in their schools, homes, families and communities. At The Children's Village, Inwood House staff work in more than 34 NYC middle and high schools, combining classroom education, small-group conversations and individual counseling so that youth are surrounded by adults who know them and can connect them to help early.
The authors also call on city and state leaders to:
Invest in more school-based clinicians
Fund community-based organizations that embed staff in schools and sustain relationships beyond school
Provide sustained support for prevention, early intervention and family engagement
For Deb and Warren, the question isn't whether schools or community organizations are responsible. "The answer, actually, is both."

Children need mental healthcare beyond school hours. New York must expand support systems for youth wellbeing.

Beginning with the class of 2028, New York students will no longer need to pass the Regents exams to graduate. That change could create more flexibility for students, but flexibility alone doesn’t guarantee equity.

In a new guest essay for amNewYork [TAG], The Children’s Village President and CEO Jeremy Kohomban argues that as New York rethinks graduation requirements, it must pair flexibility with transparency, accountability and high expectations for every student, particularly for young people in foster care and others who have historically been underestimated by our education system.

As Jeremy writes, “We want the children who have historically been offered the least to leave school with more knowledge, more choices and a stronger chance to build the lives they want.”
