Friends of the Dobbs Ferry Library

Happy National Friends of Libraries Week! 🎉

This week, we recognize and celebrate the volunteers everywhere who support their libraries in all kinds of ways—from fundraising to advocacy to spreading the word about all the great things the library has to offer.

YOU can become a friend of your library and make a lasting difference in your community. Ask your librarian about joining your library's Friends group, or consider starting your own if your library doesn't have one yet.

Let books be.

Today kicks off , an annual observation started more than 40 years ago in response to a sudden surge in the number of attempts to censor or remove books in libraries, schools, and bookstores. Sound familiar?

Today, libraries continue to face record numbers of challenges to the books on their shelves. And contrary to common narratives suggesting that concerned parents are driving these challenges, data from ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom suggests otherwise – 92% of these challenges came from pressure groups and government officials in 2025.

For this year's Banned Books Week, we remind our communities that a handful of people running organized censorship campaigns should not be allowed to dictate what the rest of us can read, and that the joy and creativity of reading is not only an act of resistance, but a freedom that must be protected.

Find ways to get involved and spread the word, censorship data, and events throughout the week at https://bit.ly/4yvixbB.

Meet Mary Yarnette!

Be sure to look for Mary Yarnette, the charming scarecrow created by Mary’s Yarns, the special crafting group of the Friends of the Dobbs Ferry Library!

Dressed in her beautiful crocheted outfit, colorful yarn hair, and fabulous straw hat, Mary Yarnette is a true celebration of creativity, friendship, and handmade treasures.

You’ll find Mary Yarnette near the Keeper’s House, as part of the wonderful Scarecrow Project created by the Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct.

Stop by, say hello, and take a picture with Mary!

Please share your photo. We love to make new Friends!

Today, Simona Connor and Vikki Jones decorated The Dobbs Ferry Library community room for fall. We are happy to support the Old Croton Aqueduct Scarecrow Parade and Ferry Festa. We are ready for our big weekend.

Nice crowd last night for screening of Dolly Parton’s 9-2-5. The screen is large and the sound is terrific!

The Friends paid for a new system thanks to the generosity of our donors!

Two ladies from our Audience were true Dolly Fans!

Any ideas for our next movie?
