Earlier this week, DALC Executive Director Jennifer Filipiak met with Sarah Widder along the Military Ridge State Trail 🚲

Sarah is riding Wisconsin's 44 state bicycle trails, covering roughly 1,700 miles of trail, to celebrate our state's outdoor spaces and raise awareness for the funding needed to protect, maintain, and expand them.

Along the way, they stopped at the Stack and Lynch conservation easements, highlighting the lasting impact of land conservation here in the Driftless. Wisconsin's Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program has helped protect special places, support outdoor recreation, and connect people with the land. With this funding currently lapsed, Sarah is using her ride to remind us what's at stake and why reliable conservation funding matters for Wisconsin's future Team Knowles Nelson

DALC staff members Shannon Roznoski and Andy Bingle joined this year’s Prairie Seed Challenge🌾

Native seed collection is an important part of prairie restoration. Collecting and sharing locally adapted seeds helps bring native plants back to the landscape, supporting biodiversity, pollinators, and healthy ecosystems across Dane County and beyond.

We’re grateful to be part of a conservation community that shares knowledge, builds relationships, and works together to care for the land. Partnerships like these help make restoration possible, one seed at a time!

Last weekend, astronomers from the Milwaukee Astronomical Society, Madison Astronomical Society, and Driftless Stargazing LLC gathered at Wintergreen to explore the night sky, share their knowledge, and learn from one another. From the Milky Way overhead to a glimpse of the Andromeda Galaxy through a telescope, the evening offered a look at Wintergreen’s potential for future stargazing gatherings🌌⭐

Protecting land also means creating opportunities for people to connect with the natural world and with each other. We’re grateful to everyone who joined us for a night of shared exploration!

Today is World Mental Health Day💚 Sometimes taking care of ourselves looks like getting outside, taking a walk, noticing what’s around us, or simply giving ourselves a little room to breathe. All of us at DALC are grateful for the places that give us space to slow down, reconnect, and spend a little time outside. We hope you find a moment for yourself today 🫶☀️

🎉DALC is proud to announce the protection of 86 acres in Iowa County through a new conservation easement with Bob Novy🎉 This landscape includes remnant oak savanna, southern dry forest, restored prairies, and oak woodlands, habitats that support native plants and wildlife and contribute to the ecological richness of the Driftless Area.

This easement also carries a special meaning for the family. In memory of Janice Froelich, whose vision and dedication started this conservation journey. Her commitment to the land will continue to shape its future for generations to come ❤️❤️

We are grateful to Bob and his family for choosing to permanently protect this special place. Conservation takes all of us, and this lasting commitment helps ensure the Driftless landscape remains healthy, diverse, and thriving.
