Today in History: Parents Tried to Protect Their Children from Polio

America’s parents were living in fear of polio in the summer of 1949. The disease, which seemed to target children under the age of five, caused paralysis and death. No one yet knew how it spread, though it appeared infections rose in warm weather.

As the Post reported today in that summer, worried mothers and fathers were keeping their children away from movie theaters, playgrounds, birthday parties, and especially swimming pools.

Hoping to keep out the virus, some homemakers kept their house and car windows shut all summer. Some bathed in bleach. Others wore garlic around their necks.
That year, 42,000 contracted the disease and nearly three thousand died. The annual count of polio cases was rising steadily.

But as fast as the numbers rose, they dropped even faster once the polio vaccine was administered to children. By 1960, the number of new cases had plummeted from 38,000 to 106.

Since 2020, there have been just three cases.

“Today in American History with Jeff Nilsson” can be heard on select public radio stations across the U.S.
