📢 KM Community: Important School Board Meeting Tuesday, October 20!

The Kettle Moraine School Board meets this Tuesday, October 20, at 7:00 PM. Several important topics are on the agenda that directly impact our students, families, and taxpayers.

Here are three things to watch:

📚 1. Human Growth & Development (HGD) – Second Reading

The Board will receive the second reading of proposed revisions to KMORR 3103, which governs the Human Growth & Development curriculum and advisory committee.

With ongoing community concerns about the future of HGD education in our district, it's important that parents and community members continue paying attention to how these policies are being shaped. Students deserve comprehensive, accurate, age-appropriate education that prepares them for real-world challenges.

💰 2. District Budget & Property Taxes

The Board is scheduled to approve the district's 2026–27 budget and certify the final property tax levy.

The proposed budget includes approximately $69.8 million in revenue and $68.7 million in expenses, with a proposed tax levy of $43.5 million — slightly below the amount presented at June's annual meeting.

These decisions affect district resources, educational priorities, and local taxpayers.

📊 3. Student Academic Achievement

Superintendent Steve Plum and Chief Academic Officer Chris Otto will review elementary academic achievement data from the 2025–26 school year.

This is an opportunity for the community to better understand how our students are performing academically and how the district is evaluating student success.

Your voice matters. Whether you're concerned about HGD curriculum, district finances, or student achievement, we encourage parents and community members to attend, stay informed, and hold district leadership accountable to the students and families they serve.

Strong public schools depend on an engaged community.

📣 KM Community – School Board Meeting Tomorrow

The Kettle Moraine School Board meets Tuesday, October 6 at 7:00 PM, with two important topics on the agenda:

⚠️ Human Growth & Development (HGD)
The Board is expected to provide direction to the HGD Committee as it begins its work reviewing the district’s curriculum. Given the discussions over the past several months about the future of HGD in Kettle Moraine, this is an important conversation for parents and community members to continue following closely.

📊 Enrollment, District Finances & Taxes
The Board will also review five-year enrollment projections and discuss district finances and tax comparisons. These conversations can have a significant impact on future budgeting, staffing, programming and long-term planning across the district.

If these issues matter to you, we encourage parents, staff and community members to attend the meeting, listen to the discussion and stay engaged.

📣 KM Community: You’re Invited to a Public Education Listening Session

State Senate candidate Mike Van Someren is inviting members of the Kettle Moraine community to a meet-and-greet and listening session focused on public education in Wisconsin.

This is an opportunity to hear directly from Mike about his ideas for improving public education — and, just as importantly, to share your own experiences, questions and concerns about the issues affecting our students, educators and communities.

📅 Thursday, October 8, 2026
⏰ 5:30–7:00 PM
📍 W313S3344 Canyon View Drive, Wales

Mike has made improving public education one of his top issues. You can read a summary of his views here:
https://www.mikevansomeren.com/improving-public-education

Our current Senator, Chris Kapenga, was contacted to request a similar meeting, but has not responded and does not offer his views on public education on his campaign page. He voted “no” on the 2025–2027 Wisconsin Budget, which increased state reimbursement for special education expenses.

If public education is an issue you care about, please consider attending on Thursday, October 8 to ask questions, hear directly from Mike and share your views on this important subject.

📣 KM Community: Have a Voice in the Human Growth & Development Curriculum Review

Kettle Moraine School District is beginning its five-year review of the Human Growth & Development (HGD) curriculum for students in upper elementary, middle school and high school.

As part of that process, the district is holding a community listening session and is inviting parents and community members to share their perspectives, ask questions and provide input.

📅 Wednesday, September 30
⏰ 6:30–7:30 PM
📍 KMHS Library

This is an important opportunity to learn more about the review process and have your voice heard as the district considers what HGD programming should look like for Kettle Moraine students.

A quorum of the Board of Education may be present, but no board meeting will be convened and no board action will be taken.

If maintaining accurate, comprehensive and robust Human Growth & Development education for KM students is important to you, now is the time to show up and make sure your perspective is part of the conversation.

KM Community: Get Involved in the Human Growth & Development Curriculum Review

Kettle Moraine School District is forming an ad hoc advisory committee to review the District’s Human Growth & Development curriculum and recommend changes to the School Board. The District is currently looking for parents and other community members to participate.

Why are we paying close attention?

This is more than a routine curriculum update. At the July 21 School Board meeting, Board President Carl Millard raised the possibility of discontinuing Human Growth & Development altogether, rather than simply reviewing and updating the existing curriculum. At the August 11 meeting, community members spoke in support of retaining HGD while modernizing what students are taught, including discussions around consent, healthy and unhealthy relationships, sexting and digital images, online exploitation and sextortion, peer pressure, bodily autonomy, safety and digital citizenship.

The distinction matters because Wisconsin law does not require school districts to offer a comprehensive Human Growth & Development program. State law establishes requirements that apply when districts choose to provide HGD, including significant emphasis on abstinence. You can review Wisconsin’s HGD statute here (https://docs.legis.wisconsin.gov/statutes/statutes/118/019).

That makes the local curriculum — and the people helping review it — especially important.

You can see Kettle Moraine’s current Human Growth & Development curriculum by grade level here (https://app.boardable.com/kettle-moraine-school-district/public-site-data/meetings/95b3a1-regular-board-meeting-with-closed-session/documents/7cc6b4f1/view?redirect=95b3a1-regular-board-meeting-with-closed-session).

The District says the committee will include 15–20 members representing different parts of the community and will work with District leadership to develop recommendations for the School Board.

If this is an issue you care about, consider getting involved in the review process.

👉 Sign up for the Human Growth & Development Advisory Committee here (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdqjK2dglSa3cyQL4Mp-3aXKrOUN-6qlJeETTZ9XwnOGbc9kA/viewform).

Applications are due September 21.

If you can’t participate yourself, please share the information with others who may be interested in serving.

KM Community – School Board Meeting Tomorrow Night

The Kettle Moraine School Board meets tomorrow, Tuesday, September 8 at 7:00 PM, and Human Growth & Development (HGD) is back on the agenda.

The board will continue discussing the HGD curriculum, including the state statute requirements that guide what is taught and the creation of an advisory committee made up of parents, teachers and community members to help inform the curriculum review.

As we've seen them do on other occasions, watch for our board to cherry pick specific state statutes that align with their personally held beliefs and gloss over others that might round out the curriculum and provide a more well rounded perspective for the student body.

Given the ongoing conversations around the future of HGD in Kettle Moraine, this is an important meeting for parents and community members to attend and stay engaged.

📅 Tuesday, September 8
⏰ 7:00 PM

We encourage you to show up, listen and be part of the conversation.

August 11, 2026 Kettle Moraine School District Board Recap: Here are some items of importance from the last board meeting. Please review and stay informed about what’s happening in the district.

Key Takeaways:

✅ The District continues to focus on efforts to reduce absenteeism.

✅ Community members showed up to speak about the importance of teaching Human Growth and Development to our students. The Board did not discuss this topic at this meeting, but it will be on the September 8th agenda. Eliminating or substantially revising the HGD curriculum are both possibilities.

✅ The Legislative Advocacy Committee (Amy Richards and Liz Nottling) has adopted a process for identifying legislative priorities and eventually recommending Board action. No additional meetings are scheduled at this time.

KM Community – Parents, This Is One to Pay Attention To

The next Kettle Moraine School Board meeting is Tuesday, August 11 at 7:00 PM.

The agenda has not yet been posted, but after some of the discussions at the July 21 meeting, we believe parents and community members should be paying close attention to what comes next.

Two curriculum discussions in particular stood out:

⚠️ Human Growth & Development

Board President Carl Millard pushed to consider eliminating Human Growth & Development as a subject taught in Kettle Moraine schools, arguing in part that these conversations should happen at home. Board member Amy Richards indicated she could potentially be persuaded but wanted public input.

Superintendent Plum emphasized that very few families currently opt their children out and stressed the importance of students receiving accurate health information. Other board members suggested modernizing the curriculum to address issues students face today, including sextortion, online coercion, digital safety and healthy relationships, rather than eliminating it.

No decision was made, but the board requested additional information and this discussion is expected to continue.

⚠️ Social Studies Curriculum

The district is also in the midst of reviewing Social Studies curriculum across grade levels. During the July meeting, Board Member Amy Richards specifically raised Board President Carl Millard's previous "Dear Colleagues" letter to district staff outlining his views about what Social Studies should teach and asked how much "teeth" the letter has and whether the district would follow its contents.

High school curriculum revisions are already nearing completion, while middle school materials continue to be evaluated and the elementary review will occur later.

These aren't small administrative matters. They are conversations about what our children will be taught, what information will be available to them and who gets to shape those decisions.

Whether you agree, disagree or simply want to understand where these discussions are headed, now is the time to pay attention.

We encourage parents, residents, staff and community members to attend Tuesday's meeting, listen to the discussion and stay engaged.

July 21, 2026 Kettle Moraine School District Board Recap: Here are some items of importance from the last board meeting. Please review and stay informed about what’s happening in the district.

Key Takeaways:

🚨 Despite ranking in the bottom 26th percentile among other districts for parent satisfaction with the School Board, Board Member Amy Richards stated that:

“There aren’t angry people at the microphones at the SB meeting as evidence that the SB is doing a good job” and “If parents are happy with the communication, safety, and KM keeps up their academic performance, the poor rating of the School Board is nothing to pay attention to”.

🚨 The School Board is considering eliminating Human Growth and Development coursework. One School Board member wants public input on this suggestion.

🚨 Legislative Advocacy meeting, August 11, 10am, District Office.

KM Community – Your Voice Matters!

The next Kettle Moraine School Board meeting takes place Tuesday, July 21 at 7:00 PM.

Agenda items currently include:

✅ An update on upcoming curriculum reviews for Social Studies, Counseling, and Human Growth & Development

✅ Presentation and discussion of the 2026 School Perceptions Surveys, including feedback from students, staff, and parents

As always, these meetings are where important conversations and decisions about our schools happen in real time. Curriculum reviews and district climate surveys help shape the educational experience for every student, making community awareness and engagement especially important.

We encourage residents, parents, staff, and community members to attend, listen, and stay informed.
