AMC MUSEUM 40 YEARS OF PRESERVING-EDUCATING
1 AND INSPIRING

Please come join us on September 26 - 27 2026!

Hangar Talk Guest: Retired Colonel Raymond Strasburger, former A-10 Pilot, current Air War College, Director of Operations will be with us on 26 Sep at 11:00 am. His Bio is Below.

Raymond “Donk” Strasburger led a 2-ship of A-10 Thunderbolt IIs – better known as “Warthogs” – during the Battle for Baghdad in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. He and his wingman destroyed major elements of an enemy armored force assaulting Task Force 2-69 Armor at Muthanna Bridge, saving American lives and allowing them to continue maneuvers to encircle Baghdad. Born in Washington D.C., Strasburger dreamed about serving in the military after listening to his father describe his experiences as a Marine during WWII. In pursuit of that dream, Strasburger attended the Catholic University of America and completed Air Force ROTC at Howard University. During ROTC he earned a pilot training slot but was disqualified when he failed a physical for what was thought to be a cutting-edge vision test. Determined to fly, he accepted a navigator slot. During his in-processing physical he discovered the eye test he failed was discontinued because it was inaccurate! Undeterred, Strasburger earned his navigator wings and although he loved the B-52 mission, he longed to be a pilot and fly fighters like his brother Frank. Over the next three years he repeatedly applied for pilot training and was finally accepted. Strasburger earned his pilot wings, qualified in the Warthog, and served in various positions during multiple fighter assignments. Eventually, he was assigned to the 75th FS at Pope AFB, North Carolina. As the Tiger Sharks’ Director of Operations, Strasburger deployed to OIF and flew 36 close air support combat missions. Following a combat change-of-command at Tallil Air Base, Iraq, Strasburger became the 75th FS Commander and coined the phrase “Tiger Shark Standard… ATTACK!” which embodied the spirit of tenacity, dedication, and excellence required by close air support warriors, and reflected the indomitable spirit of the A-10 community. Following a tour as the Joint Staff Chief of Detainee Affairs, he served a one-year tour as the 455th Air Expeditionary Operations Group Commander at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan during Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. While there, he was known for his universal dedication both in the air and on the ground. His “Commander’s Intent” was unmistakable in his credo: “Find ways to say ‘YES’…an 18-year-old warrior’s life may depend on what you do today.”

On 6 April 2003, Strasburger earned the Silver Star for providing critical close air support for Task Force 2-69 Armor, which was critically low on fuel/ammunition, occupying hasty defensive positions at Objective Monty, and under sustained/accurate enemy fire. Fighting a sandstorm and under heavy anti-aircraft artillery fire, he and his wingman, Captain Greg "Billy Bob" Thornton engaged and destroyed major elements of an armored battalion of the Hammurabi Division, Iraqi Special Republican Guard. Captain John "Coke" Blocher, also from the 75th FS, was "Advance 33," their Ground Forward Air Controller.

Climb Aboard History at the Air Mobility Command Museum's 40th Anniversary Celebration

DOVER AIR FORCE BASE, Del. — The Air Mobility Command Museum will commemorate its 40th anniversary Sept. 26–27, 2026. The public is invited to celebrate this significant milestone as the museum honors its legacy, showcases the history of airlift and air refueling, and looks ahead to the future.

On Saturday, Sept. 26, festivities will include open cockpits, historical reenactors and encampments, a living history team, an A-10 dedication ceremony, hangar talks, and a dance reminiscent of the 1940s and 1950s. The museum will open its gates at 9 a.m., with activities beginning at 10 a.m.

On Sunday, Sept. 27, visitors can again enjoy open cockpits, historical reenactors and encampments, and a living history team. The museum gates will open at 9 a.m., with activities beginning at 10 a.m.

Guests will have the opportunity to explore the interiors of several historic aircraft, including the world's only C-5 Galaxy on public display, a C-47 that participated in D-Day operations, a C-54 that flew during the Berlin Airlift, the first KC-10 ever built, a C-133 loaded with unique historical vehicles, Air Force Two, and many other significant aircraft spanning from World War II to the present day.

Visitors can also get an up-close view of the museum's newest addition, the A-10 Warthog. Knowledgeable museum volunteers, many of whom have firsthand experience with these aircraft, will be available to share stories and insights about their history and operations.

In the event of inclement weather, outdoor aircraft will be closed. However, the C-47 located inside the hangar, the control tower, flight simulator and theater will remain open.

Food will be available for purchase from a local food truck throughout the weekend.

The Air Mobility Command Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission and parking are free, and photography is encouraged.

GREGORY MARSTON
is an author, military historian, and retired USAF/ANG Colonel who served for over 34 years as a pilot flying the A-10A “Warthog” and other Close Air Support aircraft. Besides being an A-10 Wing, Group, and Squadron Commander, he was the only USAF/ANG officer to command two major combat Air Bases & USAF Groups in the Global War on Terrorism (GWOT). He served on four combat tours in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Kuwait where he also flew 80 A-10A combat missions. He recently retired from a career with American Airlines where he served as a Captain on the Boeing 777,767,757,727 and the Airbus 300-600ER. Today, he is a disabled veteran (spinal injury in the Warthog) who spends most of his time writing and lecturing on leadership and aviation, as well as helping other vets in his local area.
