Many people have reached out to me after yesterday’s vote on Senate Bill 100, so I wanted to take an opportunity to respond publicly. Since my first race, I have voted to support LGBTQ+ rights and have been proud to earn the support and trust of many in the LGBTQ+ community. To those who felt hurt and betrayed by my vote last night, I apologize. I support the right for everyone to marry, regardless of sexual orientation, race, or gender. As someone who has been in an in*******al marriage myself, I understand why this right being enshrined in the state constitution is important. It is important to be clear: gay marriage is currently legal in Delaware and has been since 2013.
There are individuals whose marriages are currently not recognized by the state, and it’s tearing families apart. I was approached by a constituent who was trying to reunite his family and was told by US immigration officials to move to a state that recognizes marriages between first cousins. I introduced a bill, HS 1 to HB8 to ensure that marriages like his, which are common in many parts of the world, would be recognized as legal marriages. I believe marriages between consenting adults should be recognized by this state, even if it's culturally or religiously different from one’s own preferences. HS 1 to HB 8 would ensure the state recognized the marriages of first cousins who were already married in other states or countries, allowing a constituent of mine to reunite his family in a time when new Americans are under attack by the Trump administration.
I hope that the state legislature will close loopholes that still allow for discrimination like this to continue in addition to enshrining existing rights into the constitution.
If SB100 is brought back for a vote I will be voting yes.
