Domestic violence can take many forms, and not all of them leave visible marks.
Abuse may include:

• Threats or intimidation
• Insults, humiliation or emotional abuse
• Controlling someone's money or access to resources
• Keeping someone away from family and friends
• Using fear to control another person's choices

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, we're reminding Delaware residents that recognizing the signs of abuse is an important step toward prevention and support.

Everyone deserves to feel safe and respected in their relationships.

The Delaware Domestic Violence Coordinating Council offers resources to help people recognize abuse, learn about safety planning and find support.

Do you know when your home was built?

If your home was built before 1978, it may contain lead-based paint. Chipped or deteriorating paint (and dust created when lead-based paint is disturbed) can expose children to lead.

Your first step: Find out what year your home was built. If it was built before 1978, learn about potential lead hazards before renovating or repairing painted surfaces.
Have questions about lead exposure or prevention? You can contact Delaware Lead Prevention Program by email @ [email protected] or call at 302-744-4546, option 2.

For more information about how to reduce lead exposure during home renovations and repairs, see our link in the comments.

Lead can be hard to see, but its effects on a child’s health can be serious.
Oct. 25–31 is National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week. This year’s theme is Keep Kids Safe From Lead.

Children younger than 6 are especially vulnerable to lead exposure because their bodies are still developing. Even low levels of lead in the blood can harm a child's health. Lead exposure can contribute to:
- Delayed growth and development
- Learning difficulties
- Brain and nervous system damage
- Hearing, speech and behavioral problems

Lead can be found in and around the home , sometimes in places you may not expect.

See the comments to learn where lead may be found and how you can help protect your family.

Have questions about lead exposure or prevention ? You can contact Delaware Lead Prevention Program by email @ [email protected] or call at 302-744-4546, option 2.

Early detection can make a difference.

November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about lung cancer prevention and the importance of screening.

According to the American Lung Association's State of Lung Cancer report, only 24.3% of Delaware residents at high risk for lung cancer received screening.
Lung cancer screening can help find cancer early, when treatment may be more effective.

You may qualify for annual lung cancer screening if you:
-Are 50 to 80 years old
- Have a history of heavy smoking (20 pack-years or more)
- Currently smoke or quit within the past 15 years

Worried about the cost? Delaware's Screening for Life program offers free lung cancer screening to eligible residents who are uninsured or whose insurance does not adequately cover screening.

Talk with your health care provider about whether lung cancer screening is right for you.
