A huge thank you to Air Enterprises for hosting the Kent Conservation District's Cover Crop Presentation and Demonstration at the Chandelle Airport on August 3, 2026. The event kicked off with Justin Hoffman, a pilot and previous owner of Air Enterprises, discussing the many flight logistics of cover crops applied through aerial application. After Justin’s presentation he and Ben Beaven, the new owner of Air Enterprises, provided participants with the opportunity to see the airplanes up close in the hangar. The group then listened to a presentation by Cara Peterson, Ph.D., from the University of Maryland, regarding the planting of cover crops using different interseeding methods. She also discussed varying methods of cover crop termination and the impacts of cover crops on soil moisture. Aaron Thompson, a cover crop program participant, described the soil and crop benefits he has received by planting cover crops on his farm. The event closed with owner Ben Beaven wowing the crowd with a live demonstration of aerial cover crop application. Guests were also treated to a boxed lunch from Skyline Catering.

We had a great turnout today for our Soil Carbon Amendment Program Breakfast catered by Skyline Catering. Our attendees had the opportunity to learn about the benefits of Soil Carbon Amendments and how it can work for their operations.

Drew Harris, University of Delaware - Kent County Ag Extension Agent spoke about the soil health benefits the program can provide and how it can be utilized on farmland in Kent County. Matt Webber, Kent Conservation District Board Member and program participant spoke about his experiences in utilizing the program on his farm.

A special thank you to our presenters, partners, and attendees for sharing their knowledge and experiences. Events like these provide valuable opportunities for farmers, landowners, and conservation professionals to connect and discuss strategies for building healthier soils. We appreciate everyone who joined us and helped make the event a success. We look forward to continuing the conversation about soil health and conservation practices throughout the year.

Congratulations to the Odessa High School FFA Envirothon Team on their win!! Thank you to all the participants, volunteers and sponsors of this year’s event. Special thanks to the Sussex Academy Elementary School for hosting the 2026 Delaware Envirothon.

Odessa High School’s FFA and Agriscience team celebrated earning first place in the 2026 Delaware Envirothon Championship, held at Sussex Academy — marking their second consecutive win. 🌿

Now in its milestone 30th year, Envirothon is a statewide environmental education competition sponsored by DNREC. This year, nine high schools and one 4-H club fielded a record 23 teams that spent the school year preparing to test their knowledge of aquatic ecology, soils and land use, wildlife, forestry and the current environmental issue of nonpoint source pollution mitigation.

After more than three hours of testing, the Odessa team was crowned state champion and will represent Delaware at the National Conservation Foundation International Envirothon in Mississippi this July.
