“Lynisha Fountaine began her employment journey with Ability Focused Professional Services in 2023. Although others initially questioned whether she would succeed in the workplace, the Ability Focused team recognized her potential and provided an opportunity grounded in dignity, individualized support, and the belief that every person deserves the chance to demonstrate their abilities.

From her first day, Lynisha showed a clear talent for completing detailed, high-quality cleaning tasks. Through one-to-one coaching, repeated demonstrations, and opportunities to practice, she expanded her skills and developed into a dependable employee. She approaches learning positively, works through challenges, and continues to take pride in the quality of her work. Her commitment has supported more than three years of continued employment.

Accessible communication has been central to Lynisha’s growth. Her partnership with Direct Support Professional Madelina Banda, whose native language is American Sign Language, allows Lynisha to communicate directly and more fully at work. Before this partnership, Lynisha often relied on technology or basic American Sign Language when communicating with staff who were not fluent, which could lead to frustration. Direct communication has strengthened trust, reduced barriers, and created a more inclusive work experience.

With consistent coaching and encouragement, Lynisha has become more confident in expressing concerns, requesting assistance when she cannot resolve an issue independently, and participating in workplace problem-solving. She continues to report to work ready to meet her responsibilities, including on days when she may be managing challenges in her personal life.

For Lynisha, employment has become much more than a job. It has provided a place where her talent is recognized, her communication needs are respected, and her voice is heard. Her long-term success reflects growing confidence, stronger self-advocacy, resilience, independence, and pride in being valued for the quality of her work. Lynisha’s story demonstrates how accessible communication, respectful support, and genuine opportunity can help a person’s abilities and potential flourish.”

Sal’s journey into employment is a story of determination, growth, and the power of encouragement and support.

While attending culinary school at the Food Bank of Delaware, Sal worked toward his goal of building skills and preparing for employment. When the program felt challenging, staff from CSI encouraged him to recognize how far he had come and reminded him that completing the program could open doors to new opportunities.

With his employment goals in mind, CSI staff supported Sal in applying for jobs, preparing for interviews and the workplace. When Sal received an interview opportunity, he was excited to share the news. With continued support and preparation, he successfully secured a position at Delaware Park. Shortly afterward, he graduated from culinary school, celebrating two important milestones in his journey.

Sal's story is a wonderful example of what can happen when personal determination and the right support come together. He set a goal, developed his skills, completed his training, and secured and maintained employment. These are meaningful accomplishments that reflect Sal’s commitment and hard work. His journey is a reminder that with encouragement, opportunities, and individualized support, people can continue building skills, pursuing their goals, and finding success in the workplace.

Jessica has been employed with the State of DE for over two years and serves as the DDDS's Community and Advocate Liaison. Jessica believes that when people with disabilities have the opportunity to pursue careers they want, it can build confidence, strengthen independence, and create a greater sense of self-worth.

For the past two years Jessica has simultaneously pursued her master's degree from , including an internship with the Division of Public Health, all while maintaining her responsibilities within DDDS.

“Working has been about more than just gaining financial independence. It has allowed me to grow both professionally and personally.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate of people with a disability who had completed a bachelor’s degree or higher rose by 0.9 percentage point over the year to 5.3 percent in 2025. Having the knowledge of this data has pushed Jessica to overcome this stereotype.
