During our time in the Affordable Housing Task Force, one thing we uncovered as a top challenge is how local government plans for housing don’t often translate into tangible housing production. At its core, the Housing for Every Delawarean Act, SB 23, addresses that directly, with the mission of getting homes built and on the market.
This legislation builds upon the existing statewide framework to increase housing supply while bringing with it the real, tangible affordability that families have been looking for. This bill does not remove any authority from local governments, and still allows them the flexibility to be empowered to make these decisions.
I was also proud to support additional legislation that was signed into law to help remove unnecessary delays in our development process, allow communities to accommodate more homes, and create a more predictable path for getting much-needed housing built across our state.
I want to thank Governor Matt Meyer for his ceremonial signing of these bills. The road to finally building affordable housing has been long, and there is still so much to be done. But these bills are a meaningful step in getting there, and I look forward to seeing the positive change they will bring about.
