NASHVILLE — Beginning Oct. 15, Tennesseans must obtain a free burn permit before burning leaves or natural debris or conducting prescribed burns. As wildfire season begins, the Tennessee Department of Agriculture Division of Forestry (TDF) encourages residents and visitors to observe National Fire Prevention Week by practicing fire prevention and exercising extra caution when burning outdoors. Tennessee averages about 1,000 wildfires each year, burning approximately 18,000 acres.

“More than 90% of wildfires in Tennessee are caused by human activities, including escaped debris burns,” State Forester Heather Slayton said. “That means individual actions matter – choosing to avoid burning on high fire danger days, getting a burn permit, taking steps to burn safely and staying with your fire until it is completely out can make a meaningful difference in preventing destructive wildfires in our state.”

TDF is Tennessee’s lead wildfire agency and is responsible by law for administering the burn permit system. Burn permits help TDF communicate when and where conditions are safe for burning and are issued only when fire danger is at an acceptable level. When hazardous conditions — such as high winds, very low humidity or extremely dry vegetation and debris — increase wildfire risk, TDF temporarily pauses permit issuance until conditions improve.

SRO Ricky Smith was such a kind hearted person and mentor to many. He will be deeply missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and our Law Enforcement community.

Our hearts are broken as we learn of the passing of Officer Ricky Smith. Ricky was an SRO with the Stewart County Sheriffs Office. Prior to that, he was a part of our family at the Dover Police Department. Anyone who knows or have had dealings with Ricky knew he was one of the funniest, kind hearted person you will ever run across. His huge heart, laughter and loving personality was infectious. You will be missed by all of us brother.

Please keep his family and his law enforcement brothers and sisters in your thoughts and prayers during this very difficult time.

🇺🇸 September 11, 2001 — We Remember.

Today, Stewart County Fire Rescue honors the 343 firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001, along with the police officers, EMTs, military personnel, and all those who lost their lives that day.

We remember the courage of those who ran toward danger while others were running away. We remember the families who never got to see their loved ones come home. And we remember the unity, compassion, and strength that followed one of the darkest days in our nation’s history.

343 firefighters. 23 NYPD officers. 37 Port Authority officers. And countless others who gave everything.

Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

From one fire family to another — we remember, we honor, and we will never forget. 🇺🇸🚒

🔥🌾 TO***CO BARN SEASON IS HERE! 🌾🔥

🙅Do not call 911 for white smoke

🚒 Call 911 if:

* You see excessive black smoke.
* Flames are outside the normal firing area.
* Smoke or flames are spreading or out of control.

**Smoke is expected during firing**, but excessive black smoke or flames outside the normal firing area may signal an emergency.

When in doubt, call it out! It’s better for firefighters to respond early than arrive too late.

Have a safe to***co season from Stewart County Fire Rescue! 🚒❤️
