Did you know opossums have a very poor sense of sight?

Opossums are nocturnal animals, and their eyes are adapted for that. With large eyes and always dilated pupils, their vision is very poor during daytime, only really suited for the night.

What they excel in is their other senses! Their sense of smell is many times greater than a person’s, and they can easily detect and distinguish between food, as well as sense predators! Their strong hearing and long whiskers also help give them a sense of their surroundings!

This is also why partially blind or visually impaired opossums in our care can potentially be released! Their other senses can more than make up for what they lack in sight!

Did you know you can sponsor one of our resident animals for a year?

While our residents have permanent homes at TreeHouse, and their care is ongoing. Your sponsorship helps provide the food, housing, veterinary care, and daily attention they need to thrive.❤️

These animals also play an important role in helping us educate our community and share their stories.

When you become a Guardian, you’re directly helping care for one of these special residents while supporting the work we do for wildlife every day!❤️

Want to become a Guardian? Check out our Resident Animals and find one to sponsor!
