DeKalb County Fire Department was dispatched to a commercial structure fire on Sparta Highway at Center Hill Sports Marine Friday evening at 6:04 p.m.

DeKalb 911 received multiple reports from passing motorists of heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof of the business. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire throughout the building with threatened exposures to other nearby building that contained new vessel inventory. Fire crews successfully contained the blaze and protected the exposures that included several new pontoon boats. Firefighters remained on the scene for nearly 6 hours performing firefighting and salvage and overhaul operations.

The main building and shop located in the rear, including all contents, were complete losses. A pickup truck parked outside at the rear of the business was also a complete loss. The business was closed at the time of the incident. No injuries were reported.

While the final determination of origin of the fire is still pending, the preliminary finding is that the fire started from a pickup truck parked outside at the rear of the building.

DeKalb County Fire Department’s Johnson’s Chapel, Midway, Four Seasons, Cookeville Highway, Main stations, and county-wide personnel responded to the scene, along with mutual aid assistance from White County’s Cassville and Central View fire departments.

Other agencies assisting on the scene were DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, DeKalb County Emergency Medical Services, DeKalb County Emergency Management Agency, Caney Fork Electric Cooperative, and Middle Tennessee Natural Gas.

🚨 FIREFIGHTER FRIDAY🚨
Meet Hasten Waggoner!
It is time for another , and today we are shining the spotlight on Firefighter Hasten Waggoner from Blue Springs Station! Hasten has been a dedicated member of the DeKalb County Fire Department team for 2 years and 8 months.
When he isn't answering the call with DCFD, Hasten stays incredibly busy serving our community at the Sheriff’s Office and working part-time on a farm. At home, he takes care of his two cats and three horses, and when he finally gets some free time, you can find him out hunting or fishing.
Here is a closer look at Hasten’s journey in the fire service:

• Why he joined: "I became a volunteer with DCFD to be a bigger part of the community and to help people in need."
• Favorite part of the station: Hanging out with his fellow firefighters and pushing himself with continuous training.
• Favorite memory: Completing the intense live burn training alongside his crew.
• One word to describe his time in the fire service: "Honor"

Thinking about volunteering but worried about your schedule?
Hasten has some advice for you: "The initial training is very flexible. Once that is over, you can control how involved you are."
Shoutouts & Mentors:
Hasten wants to give a huge thank you to former Station Commander Kyle Hovey for being an excellent leader when he first started, as well as Lt. Andrew Harvey for always guiding fellow firefighters in the right direction for service.

Thank you, Hasten, for your dedication, hard work, and service to DeKalb County! 🚒👨‍🚒

Make sure to get those burn permits starting October 15!

NASHVILLE — Beginning Oct. 15, Tennesseans must obtain a free burn permit before burning leaves or natural debris or conducting prescribed burns. As wildfire season begins, the Tennessee Department of Agriculture Division of Forestry (TDF) encourages residents and visitors to observe National Fire Prevention Week by practicing fire prevention and exercising extra caution when burning outdoors. Tennessee averages about 1,000 wildfires each year, burning approximately 18,000 acres.

“More than 90% of wildfires in Tennessee are caused by human activities, including escaped debris burns,” State Forester Heather Slayton said. “That means individual actions matter – choosing to avoid burning on high fire danger days, getting a burn permit, taking steps to burn safely and staying with your fire until it is completely out can make a meaningful difference in preventing destructive wildfires in our state.”

TDF is Tennessee’s lead wildfire agency and is responsible by law for administering the burn permit system. Burn permits help TDF communicate when and where conditions are safe for burning and are issued only when fire danger is at an acceptable level. When hazardous conditions — such as high winds, very low humidity or extremely dry vegetation and debris — increase wildfire risk, TDF temporarily pauses permit issuance until conditions improve.
