Twenty-five years ago, our world changed forever. As we mark the 25th anniversary of September 11th, we honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost, including the hundreds of brave first responders who ran toward danger to save others.

A quarter-century later, that standard of selfless service lives on right here at home.

Behind every emergency response in Central Minnesota is a dedicated team—our 911 dispatchers taking the critical call, and our law enforcement officers, firefighters, first responders, EMTs, and paramedics arriving on scene. They answer the call during our darkest moments, carrying forward that same spirit of duty, calm, and quiet sacrifice day in and day out.

On World Su***de Prevention Day, we want to address a reality that hits close to home for our public safety family: the work our first responders do every day comes with heavy weight.
Dispatchers, police officers, first responders, firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics show up for everyone else on their worst days. But taking care of our communities starts with taking care of each other—and taking care of ourselves.

Reaching out for help isn't a sign of weakness. It's maintaining your equipment so you can keep doing the job. Checking in on your shift partner, noticing when someone seems off, and creating a culture where it’s okay to talk about the hard calls saves lives just as much as any field intervention.

Look out for your crew. Talk to each other. Get help when you need it.

September is National Preparedness Month. For our volunteer and on-call responders, emergency preparedness hits a little differently.
When the pager goes off, you don't get the luxury of a warm-up. You drop whatever you’re doing—at home, at work, or in the middle of dinner—and respond. But stepping out the door with confidence means knowing your personal life and family are set up to handle the sudden absence.
Preparedness isn't just about agency logistics; it's what enables you to answer the call without second-guessing what's happening back home. Take time this month to dial in your personal setup:

*A Family Plan: Does your family know what to do if you get toned out during severe weather or a long incident? Ensure they have 72 hours of supplies, emergency contacts, and clear plans.
*A Vehicle Kit: Keep a dedicated go-bag in your personal vehicle with season-appropriate gear, extra uniform items or a change of clothing, headlamps, water, high-protein snacks, and backup chargers.

Our communities rely on the selflessness of volunteer and on-call providers who step up at a moment's notice. Taking care of your home front keeps you ready for the call.
Thank you to all our area volunteer and on-call responders (and the families who support them) for your constant readiness!

When you see flashing lights or hazard signals on the side of the road, what you do in the next few seconds can save a life.

August 31 marks Ted Foss Move Over Day—a day to honor Minnesota State Patrol Corporal Ted Foss, who tragically lost his life in 2000 during a routine traffic stop on I-90.

Our roadways are the "offices" for first responders, tow truck operators, construction crews, and highway maintenance teams. Every time they step out onto the shoulder, they rely on passing drivers to give them room to do their jobs safely

We’re in the final days of summer. That can only mean that back to school is just around the corner.

Quick Reminders for the Season Ahead:
*School Zones Are Back: Expect extra traffic, lower speed limits, and sudden stops around schools and bus routes during morning and afternoon transitions.
*Watch for Walking & Biking Students: Kids are excited, distracted, and moving fast—keep an eye on crosswalks and neighborhood intersections.
*Patience on the Road: Give school buses plenty of distance, and always stop when red lights are flashing and stop arms are extended.

Shoutout to our Left-Handed EMS Coordinator and all the southpaws keeping Central Minnesota safe!

Only about 10% of people are lefties—which means adapting to righty-designed gear setups, vehicle controls, and that classic ink smudge down the side of your hand every time you fill out a form. We know the struggle is real!
