Dubuque Residents Encouraged to Walk, Bike, or Roll to School on October 7

The City of Dubuque, in conjunction with the Dubuque Safe Routes to School Committee, encourages students to walk, bike, scooter, or skateboard to school on National Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day, which will be observed on Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Students from all Dubuque Community School District and Holy Family Catholic Schools (Official) schools are encouraged to use a form of active transportation on their way to school on Oct. 7. Several schools are hosting “walking school buses” for students and families to walk together along designated routes.

Individual schools may choose to hold their observations on another date.

The Dubuque Safe Routes to Schools Committee seeks to increase the number of students walking, biking, or rolling to school. These forms of active transportation have numerous benefits, including:
- Improved physical health and mental well-being
- Increased student learning outcomes
- Reduced traffic congestion
- Strengthened community connection
- Better air quality and reduced emissions

The Dubuque Safe Routes to Schools Committee is a partnership which includes the Dubuque Community School District, the City of Dubuque, the Director of Safe Routes to School for the Iowa Bicycle Coalition, and the East Central Intergovernmental Association.

National Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day events are intended to raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking and bicycling, while emphasizing the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, and concern for the environment. The events build connections between families, schools, neighborhoods, and the broader community.

Additional information can be found on the National Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day website: WalkBiketoSchool.org For more local information, contact Jason Duba from the Dubuque Safe Routes to Schools Committee by calling 563-589-4223 or emailing [email protected]

City of Dubuque Extends Cooling Centers Through Friday

Due to continued extreme heat and humidity, the City of Dubuque is extending operation of its public cooling centers through Friday, Sept. 4. During this time, temperatures are forecast to be in the 90s with high humidity, which are expected to combine to produce heat index readings over 100.

The City of Dubuque activated public cooling centers earlier this week. The following cooling centers will be open the listed hours on Friday:
- Bunker Hill Golf Course Clubhouse, 2200 Bunker Hill Rd. 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.
- Carnegie-Stout Public Library, 360 W. 11th St. 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
- Dubuque County Democrats, 123 Main St. 11 a.m. - 7 p.m.
- Dubuque Intermodal Transportation Center Lobby, 950 Elm St. 6:45 a.m. - 6:15 p.m.
- Dubuque Rescue Mission Dubuque Rescue Mission, 398 Main St. 7 a.m. - 6 p.m.
- ImOn Arena, 1800 Admiral Sheehy Dr. 7 a.m. - 1 p.m.
- Kennedy Mall (public areas), 555 John F. Kennedy Rd. 10 a.m. - 9 p.m.
- Multicultural Family Center, 1157 Central Ave. 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
- Petco, 2541 Northwest Arterial. 9 a.m. - 9 p.m.
- PetSmart, 1300 John F. Kennedy Rd. 9 a.m. - 9 p.m.
- The Salvation Army-Dubuque, 1099 Iowa St. 9 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

The City of Dubuque is advising residents to take precautionary measures to prevent heat-related illness. Although anyone at any time can suffer from heat-related illness, the people at greatest risk include:
- People aged 65 or older
- Infants and young children
- Overweight individuals
- People who are performing manual labor or exercising outdoors
- People who have chronic health conditions, especially heart disease or high blood pressure, or those who take certain medications, such as those for depression, insomnia, or poor circulation

To protect your health when temperatures and humidity are high, remember to keep cool and use common sense. The following tips are important:
- Use a buddy system: Check on your neighbors, friends, and relatives. Watch others for heat-induced illness as some people may not realize they are suffering heat-related illnesses and can become confused or lose consciousness.
- NEVER leave people or pets alone in a closed car/automobile.
- Increase fluid intake, regardless of your activity level. The best way to tell you are well hydrated is if your urine is light yellow. If it gets dark, rehydrate by drinking water immediately.
- If experiencing excessive sweating, especially over several hours, replace salt and minerals by eating foods like bananas and salty crackers, or drink rehydrating beverages that contain salts, such as sports drinks and special rehydration fluids.
- Choose lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and wear sunscreen.
- Wear hats that shade your face, such as sun hats, visors, etc.
- Keep in the shade or air-conditioned areas as much as possible.
- Work slowly if you are not used to working or exercising in heat and humidity. Stop immediately if you get dizzy, nauseated, or feel weak. Go into an air-conditioned space and drink cool liquids.
- Check on outdoor pets to make sure they have plenty of water and do not leave unattended pets in vehicles.
