WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT BATS!

Think bats are spooky, scary creatures? Think again! These amazing little mammals are some of nature’s most fascinating and important animals!

Here are some incredible bat facts you might not know:

They’re the only mammals capable of true flight! Unlike flying squirrels, bats actually fly by flapping their wings.

They have their own built-in sonar! Many bats use echolocation, sending out high-pitched sounds and listening for echoes to find insects in the dark. Nature’s very own night-vision system!

They’re natural pest controllers! Insect-eating bats can consume huge numbers of insects, helping protect crops and reduce unwanted bugs.

Some bats help flowers and forests thrive! Fruit- and nectar-eating bats pollinate plants and spread seeds, helping forests grow and regenerate.

There are more than 1,400 bat species worldwide! They come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, and most do not drink blood. Only a few species feed on blood.

Most bats have just one baby at a time! That means protecting bat populations is especially important because they can take time to recover when their numbers decline.

WHY SHOULD WE CARE ABOUT BATS?

Bats play a vital role in keeping our ecosystems healthy. Sadly, habitat loss, pesticides, and diseases such as white-nose syndrome threaten many bat populations.

The next time you see bats flying at dusk, remember that these incredible creatures are not monsters to fear. They’re essential members of our natural world!
