Doreen started volunteering with us more than 18 years ago! She helps keep our offices running by doing administrative tasks, an especially important job during busy seasons like the holidays.

"I really like doing office tasks for Second Harvest, and I encourage anyone with a good eye for detail to do it," Doreen shares. "It is so fulfilling, and a great way to get out and meet people."

Thank you, Superior Rotary and Rotary Club of Duluth #25 for spending the afternoon with us last week packing 3,273 pounds of fresh produce for our Northland neighbors‼️

We are so grateful for all our volunteers. Your work ensures healthy and accessible food for children, families, and seniors in the Northland. 🍎❤️

We had the great honor to something amazing with a local partner. On Oct. 14th, after our weekly meeting, our Rotarians helped sort and package meals for our community. Thanks for Second Harvest Northland for the opportunity!

Meet Jess, our Development and Marketing Manager!

What is your favorite part of your job?
Because I work in our marketing department, I get to spend a lot of my time with the stories of our neighbors, partners, volunteers, and donors. Sharing their stories, and the impact of all of our programs throughout the region, is inspiring. It makes it a pleasure to come into work every day.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
I‘m all about outdoor granny-hobbies. Gardening, bird-watching, foraging, etc. My husband and I have done a ton of work to turn our yard over to native prairie plants the last few years, and this summer was the first time it was all in full bloom. Watching bees, bugs, and birds make use of the new habitat is pretty much peak satisfaction for me.

Together, your 1,637 hours of volunteering ensured weekend meals for kids as part of our BackPack Program, nutritious meals for seniors as part of our Nutrition for Seniors Program and fresh produce for families throughout our 15-county region. You can help end hunger throughout NE Minnesota and NW Wisconsin during your regular grocery shopping! From October 16 through November 2 at participating Super One Foods and Liquor stores, you can donate to Super One's "Bag Hunger" campaign at the register.

Donate $1, $3, $5 or round up your total to ensure neighbors facing hunger in our community have access to nutritious meals this holiday season.

When Amber faced a complicated recovery after having her fourth child, she applied for SNAP (The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) to make ends meet. “Having SNAP lifted off quite a bit of stress,” she said. ‘“I was able to buy nutritious foods that I needed to get back to helping and raising my children.”

SNAP was a bridge for Amber’s family during a difficult time, and it made all the difference. Today, Amber is working on her doctorate in public health and has become an advocate for SNAP in Minnesota.

Public nutrition programs like SNAP and charitable food systems are complementary. Neither can replace the other, and both must work well for neighbors. That’s why we advocate for a strong federal Farm Bill, including a robust SNAP program, to support families like Amber’s when times are tough.

Encouraging your lawmakers to support SNAP is another way you can fight hunger in the Northland.

America produces far more food than we can eat: nearly 30% of our food supply goes unpurchased and uneaten. Yet, 75,000 of our neighbors in the Northland lack access to nutritious food. That’s where we come in!

Most of the 12 million pounds of food we distribute each year is surplus product, donated by manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, and growers. And thanks to the support of nearly 2,000 volunteers each year, we are able to distribute that food throughout the region.

How long have you been at Second Harvest?
I have been working at Second Harvest for almost four months now!

What is your favorite part of your job?
I really enjoy the staff. Everyone is happy to be here and always so helpful to each other.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work?
In the warmer months I like to go rockhounding and exploring outside. In the winter I like curling at the Duluth Curling Club.
