The Duluth Fire Department is a modern day Firefighting force comprised of 132 uniformed firefighters and support staff, providing All Hazard Response, Prevention, Inspection and Emergency Management to the residents and vistors to the City of Duluth. We are strategically placed throughout the city limits with 8 stations. These stations are occupied and ready to respond 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. The DFD is well trained in all aspects of a modern day professional Firefighting Force. We are ready to fight fire, respond to medical emergencies, car accidents, perform technical rescue, confined space, hazardous material incidents, fire prevention and investigations, and anything else we may encounter. The Building Safety Division has also joined the Fire Department to provide life safety through progressive building and housing code enforcement. Last year, we thought we were just having a little fun with mustaches.

Instead, Duluth Fire's Mustache Madness accidentally went viral, thousands of you showed up in the comments, and we learned very quickly that the internet has strong opinions about firefighter facial hair. 😂

So after the absolutely unreal engagement — and comments like:

“That mustache looks like it has a PhD in Mustache Studies.”
“Perfect lip mitten.”
“That’s a quality caterpillar.”
“He kinda reminds me of the dad from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.”
😂

…there was simply no way we were going to skip year two.

That’s right — Mustache Madness is BACK. 🥸

For those who weren’t around last year, here’s the deal: our firefighters grow their finest, thickest, best mustaches, we put them before the court of public opinion, and you decide who deserves the glory.

Last year gave us thousands of votes, brutally funny commentary, unexpected internet fame, and one very important lesson:

Never underestimate the entertainment value of a group of firefighters growing mustaches.

What's a CPAT you ask? It's a Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) which is the recognized standard for measuring an individual's ability to handle the physical demands of being a firefighter.

Did you know that fire fighter occupational cancer is the leading cause of line-of-duty death in the fire service?

A recent study published by the National Institute of Health shows that, compared to the general population, firefighters have an increased cancer incidence and mortality. The increased risk has been associated with cumulative firefighting chemical exposures and increased length of employment as a firefighter.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified occupational exposure as a firefighter as carcinogenic to humans. However, there is limited information on occupational cancer risks to firefighters that primarily affect females—such as breast cancer—because firefighting has historically been a profession held predominantly by males.

The few studies investigating breast cancer risk among firefighters suggest an increased risk. For example, a US study using data from 1950 to 2009 found that female firefighters had a 39% increased risk of dying from breast cancer compared to women in the general US population and a 26% increased risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer compared to women in the US population.

A huge THANK YOU to the Duluth community for showing up in incredible numbers for our Fire Prevention Week Open House at Station 7 last night.

Seeing so many families, kids, neighbors and community members walk through the doors, meet our crews, explore the station and learn about fire safety meant more to us than we can say. Events like this are a reminder that fire prevention is truly a community effort, and the connections we build outside of an emergency are just as important as the work we do when the tones drop.

We are incredibly grateful for the support you continue to show the Duluth Fire Department and for trusting us to serve this community every day.

A special thank you to Super One Miller Hill and Costco for their donations that made this event possible as well as Resource Renew, Safe Kids NE MN and Red Cross for sharing their valuable knowledge with the community.

This year's Fire Prevention Week theme is:

Lithium-ion batteries store a lot of energy in a small place. These batteries can overheat, start a fire, or explode if overcharged or damaged. This week we will focus on the everyday charging habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires and keep homes and communities safer.
