Could Iran use artificial intelligence to influence the upcoming midterm elections?

FBI Co-Deputy Director Christopher Raia discusses the evolving foreign influence threat, how adversaries may use AI and emerging technology, and what the FBI is watching as the midterms approach.

This is one part of a much broader conversation about changes inside the FBI, artificial intelligence, national security, election threats and how the Bureau has evolved over the past 18 months.

Watch the full interview with Co-Deputy Director Raia at the link in the post.

Inside the FBI: A Conversation with Co-Deputy Director Christopher Raia

I recently sat down with FBI Co-Deputy Director Christopher Raia for a wide-ranging conversation about the changes taking place inside the Bureau and the challenges ahead.

We discussed foreign influence and the midterm elections, artificial intelligence, emerging threats, changes in FBI priorities and operations, and how the Bureau has evolved over the past 18 months.

I also want to acknowledge that some of those changes have genuinely and negatively affected people many of us know, worked alongside and respect. Their service and experiences should not be overlooked.

The purpose of this interview is not to tell anyone what to think about the direction of the FBI. It is an opportunity to hear directly from one of the senior career agents helping lead the Bureau through this period of change.

Listen to what he has to say. Consider it in light of your own experience.

Then form your own opinions.

Whatever changes come to the FBI, we should never lose sight of the agents, analysts and professional staff who continue to carry out the mission every day.

Statement from the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI

On the Passing of Director Robert S. Mueller III
March 21, 2026

The Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI mourns the passing of Director Robert S. Mueller III, who died on March 20, 2026, at the age of 81.

At a time when many young men sought to avoid Vietnam, Bob Mueller volunteered for the United States Marine Corps. He earned a Bronze Star for heroism and a Purple Heart in combat. That willingness to step forward, to shoulder the hardest assignment, to serve without complaint never left him. It defined him. And it was exactly what the FBI needed when he walked through the door.

Director Mueller began his tenure just one week before the September 11 attacks. What followed was one of the most consequential transformations in the Bureau’s history. He rebuilt the FBI into a counterterrorism force capable of meeting the demands of a new and dangerous era. The standard was brutal and unforgiving. Preventing 99 out of 100 terrorist plots was not enough. He accepted that standard and led accordingly.

The men and women of the FBI who served under Director Mueller knew what he was. They saw the Marine in him every day. In his bearing, his expectations, his refusal to cut corners, and his absolute commitment to the mission. He asked a great deal of the people around him because he asked even more of himself.

To Ann Mueller and the entire Mueller family, the thousands of men and women who proudly served as Special Agents of the FBI extend our deepest condolences. Your husband, your father, your family member gave his life in service to this country, in uniform and out of it.

That sacrifice does not go unrecognized. We are grateful. We are honored to have served in the institution he shaped. And we will not forget him.

Statement from Society President Michael E. Anderson on recent firings of FBI Agents:

ln light of the recent firings of FBI special agents and senior executives, the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI, calls on FBI Director Patel to ensure the full due process rights of all FBI employees that are guaranteed by federal law and our Constitution.

When FBI employees are terminated and given no explanation or nebulous, ill-defined justification, it has a chilling effect and undermines the great work of the FBI, impeding ongoing investigations and eroding the security of our United States. Due process is a guaranteed right and not an option.

I am Mike Clark, President of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI.
Agents and leaders have been fired for what appear to be political reasons.
This is wrong. It destroys trust. It threatens the independence Americans expect.

Retired Special Agent Mike Clark, President of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI, shares his thoughts on the confirmation of new FBI Director Kash Patel.

Mike reaffirms the Society’s strong support for the men and women of the FBI who work tirelessly to protect this country, no matter who is in charge.

He reflects on the dedication of career agents and professional staff, the realities of the job beyond public perception, and the importance of working with every new director to uphold the Bureau’s mission.

Watch as he shares his perspective on what Director Patel will see when he steps inside the FBI and the responsibility we all have to support those who wear the badge today.

Full Remarks:

Message from Mike Clark – Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI

The confirmation of Kash Patel as the next Director of the FBI comes at a time when the Bureau faces immense scrutiny and public debate. Regardless of politics or leadership changes, one thing remains constant: our unshakable support for the rank-and-file agents who dedicate their lives to upholding the law and protecting this country.

As former agents, we have served under multiple directors, each with their own perspectives and priorities. But what never changes is the quality, professionalism, and dedication of the men and women who take the oath and pin on the badge.

When Director Patel steps inside the Bureau and looks beyond the headlines, he will see what we all know to be true—the real FBI is made up of individuals who put service above self, working tirelessly to protect the American people.

Yes, like any organization, there are areas that can be improved, and adjustments may need to be made. But the FBI of television dramas or the court of public opinion is not the FBI we know.

The real Bureau is built on integrity, sacrifice, and an unshakable commitment to justice.

As we have done with every director before, we stand ready to work with Director Patel in the best interests of the FBI and the country it serves.

To the agents on the job today—stay focused, stay strong, and know that you have the support of those who came before you.

Mike Clark

A Message of Support for Today’s FBI Agents

Dear Fellow Society Members,

In times like these, a simple message of support can go a long way. The men and women of the FBI continue to do the hard, often unseen work that keeps this country safe. They don’t do it for recognition or headlines—they do it because they believe in the mission, just like we did.

I encourage each of you to take a moment to record a short video sharing your thoughts and post it on the Society’s official social channels. It doesn’t need to be political or scripted—just a reminder to current agents that we see them, we respect the work they do, and we know firsthand the sacrifices that come with the job.

The public often only sees the “TV” version of the FBI, but we know the reality: the countless hours spent investigating cases, the dedication to justice, and the lives changed because of what the Bureau stands for. A few words from those who’ve walked that path before can make a real difference.

Let’s come together as a Society and show today’s agents that we stand with them.

Post your video message here on the Society’s page in the comments section of my video.

Thank you for taking the time to do this—it matters.
