🔋 Bet you didn’t know ALL these items have batteries!

Your phone is just the beginning. From electric toothbrushes and TV remotes to power tools, earbuds, smart watches and more, lithium-ion batteries are hiding in plain sight all around your home.

📖 Flip through our battery scrapbook to see just how many everyday items rely on rechargeable batteries!

A few reminders:
⚡ Charge safely: Use the recommended charger and a hard, stable surface.
🔌 Fully charged? Unplug it! Once your device is fully charged, disconnect it from the charger.
📦 Store safely: Keep batteries and devices away from extreme heat and potential damage.
⚠️ Spot a swollen or damaged battery? Stop using or charging it and contact a battery disposal facility for safe handling instructions.
🔋 Have used batteries to get rid of? Check out local options in Durango, including the Durango Recycling Center, Recla Metals LLLP, and participating retailers such as Home Depot and local auto parts stores.

Always check with each location first to confirm they accept your battery type and are open for drop-off.

Know what’s powered by a battery. Charge smart. Stay safe. 🚒

🚒 A successful training takes a team! 🚑

Thank you to the City of Durango - Government, Durango Airport, our neighboring fire districts, emergency response partners, and all the community volunteers who helped make this full-scale training possible.

Exercises like this give our crews valuable hands-on experience, strengthen communication between agencies, and help us learn how to work together during a large-scale emergency. We learned a lot from participating, and we’re grateful for the time and effort everyone put into making this training a success.

The more we train together, the better prepared we are to serve our community when it matters most. ❤️

Lifesaving skills aren't just for first responders! 🚑⚽️

One of our EMS Captains recently visited Durango Soccer Club to teach their athletes vital CPR and AED skills. While we hope they never have to use them, knowing what to do when every second counts saves lives.

It is incredibly inspiring to see these young athletes stepping up as leaders to keep their community safe. Thank you for having us out, and best of luck this soccer season! Let’s cheer them on, everyone! ⚽️🚒👏

🔋 Got dead batteries? Don’t throw them in the trash! 🪫

Save your used household batteries and take them to a local battery recycling or drop-off location.

Before you go, check with the location to make sure they accept your battery type and are open for drop-off.

⚠️ Got a swollen or damaged battery? Do not place it in a collection bucket. Contact the disposal facility for specific handling instructions.

Why does it matter? Batteries can cause fires when they’re thrown in the trash or recycling. They can ignite in garbage trucks, at homes, transfer stations and landfills.

Let’s keep batteries out of the trash and help prevent battery-related fires 🔥🚫

We’re hiring for two leadership positions at Durango Fire Protection District.

As DFPD looks toward the future, these opportunities represent both growth and leadership succession within our organization.

🚒 EMS Battalion Chief
Our current EMS Chief is preparing for a well-deserved retirement, creating an opportunity for an experienced leader to step into this position and help lead the future of emergency medical services.

🔥 Division Chief of Emergency Services
As our department is growing and we are preparing to open a new fire station in 2027, we’re looking for an experienced leader to help guide the continued growth of our department. This is a newly created position in our expanding organization.

Both positions offer the opportunity to make a lasting impact on our department, our members, and the communities we serve.

📍 Durango, Colorado
📅 Applications close Friday, October 2, 2026

🔥 Fire restrictions are lifted effective 12:01 a.m. Thursday, September 17, 2026.

We want to thank our community for your patience, understanding and vigilance throughout this dry summer. So far, we’ve been doing great (knock on wood!), and we appreciate everyone doing their part to help prevent human-caused wildfires.

The recent rain is a welcome change, but fuel moisture remains critically low, and drought conditions continue. We ask that you continue to use caution with any ignition source through the fall.

The rain will eventually end, and dry conditions will return. Don’t let your guard down.

⚠️ Please check restrictions as you recreate outside the Durango Fire Protection District. Fire restrictions may vary by jurisdiction, so always check local regulations before heading out, especially if you’re visiting National Forests, BLM lands, Tribal lands, or neighboring counties.

🔗 For restrictions from other agencies and jurisdictions, visit the link in our bio.

❤️ Thank you for helping protect our community, firefighters, public lands, national forests, tribal lands, wildlife, and the places we all love to enjoy.
