From pinch pots and slab rolling to throwing on the wheel, students in Kayleigh Weir’s Beginning Ceramics class at Durango High School are mastering fundamental art techniques! 🎨

This semester, students will complete three core hand-building projects — pinch pots, slab boxes, and coil vases — along with a two-week rotation learning how to throw on the wheel. Once students master these foundational methods, they get the opportunity to create custom, self-directed projects of their own choosing.

Right now, students are busy applying intricate glazes to finish up their slab-built box creations.

Ms. Weir, who is in her fifth year at DHS, also teaches Beginning Jewelry, where students learn to work in metal, clay, and glass fusing, and Advanced 3D Art, where upper-level students can combine multiple artistic mediums — like clay work and metal or beading skills — into unique, multi-faceted creations.

School Storytellers: Thank you to Durango High School 3D Art Teacher Kayleigh Weir, who took time out of her day to share this classroom story.

Building real-world skills from day one! 🔨🧰

In the Construction Trades CTE pathway at Durango High School, Wood Shop Teacher Peter Lutz is guiding students through hands-on learning that prepares them for careers beyond the classroom.

Students in the Construction Systems Technology class recently received their tool bags — equipped with hammers, cat’s paws, tape measures, speed squares, and more — and they're mastering circular saw and miter saw safety. By the end of the year, they'll be building full-scale mock-ups covering everything from framing, electrical, and plumbing to stair stringers, rafter pitches, and drywall.

Even better? Students are earning industry-recognized credentials — Home Builders Institute pre-apprenticeship certification training this fall, then OSHA safety training in the spring — giving them a major head start and a valuable resume boost as they prepare to compete in the statewide SkillsUSA competition!

Students at Durango High School are spinning wheels toward a greener future during Bike to School Week! 🚲

Organized annually by the DHS Green Team, the event encourages students to swap single-occupancy vehicle rides for walking, biking, or rolling to school. To track their impact, student organizers created a digital scanning system using QR codes and Google Forms, entering participants into daily prize raffles supported by local business partners like Mountain Bike Specialists and Durango Cyclery.

Timed alongside the City of Durango’s fall Walk and Roll to School Day, the effort aims to build lasting habits before winter weather sets in — proving that small daily choices can create long-term impact for our environment. 🌿
