A day of celebration in Durham recognizing the promotion of Captain Warren Kadden, dedicated service by Firefighter Devon Skerry, and the retirement of Captain Gary Kustra.
"Today we did one of the most important things a fire department can do: we celebrated our people.
We honored Warren Kadden on his promotion to Captain — a leader whose behind-the-scenes care kept our members safe, one bottle of air at a time, one fit test at a time.
We recognized Devon Skerry for a different kind of courage — the courage to look after hearts and minds, to say that behavioral health is every bit as vital as hose and apparatus.
And we said thank you to Gary Kustra, a servant of Durham and its people for over two decades — a captain who fixed problems, not people, and who found the best in everyone he served alongside. From sculptor to screen printer, Gary's fingerprints are all over this department, and we are eternally grateful.
These are not three separate stories. They are one story — the story at the heart of our mission. To protect lives, property, and the environment; to serve with integrity, compassion, and teamwork. Firefighters forever live to leave this place better than we found it. Your legacy is alive.
To serve others is a privilege.
Most people have a job; we answer a calling.
Warren, Devon, Gary — and to each member and every family who has joined us today — thank you for the honor of serving beside you.
May we go home safe, serve this community proud, and carry one another always."
