Durham Saves Water Help Wayne Drop and everyone in the City of Durham encourage our residents, students, businesses, and supporters to USE WATER WISELY. Every ounce counts!

Water and wastewater services are a critical function of a healthy community. The Department of Water Management has more than 300 dedicated employees that provide an adequate supply of safe drinking water to customers and visitors of Durham. We are also responsible for protecting the environment by making sure that wastewater treated at the water reclamation facilities meets all discharge/permit limits. The department has a wide variety of support divisions and programs to maintain the existing infrastructure that provides these integral services and strive to be a responsible steward of the City’s Physical Assets. Treatment facilities are staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Emergency response teams for water main breaks, sewer spills and other emergency maintenance are always available as well. Maintaining the financial integrity of the water and sewer systems is also a priority and key function of the department. Customer Billing Services strives to accurately bill all customers for their water and sewer services. Rates are evaluated annually to ensure that the department is providing cost-effective services while ensuring that necessary capital projects are funded appropriately. Please note, this Facebook account is not monitored 24/7. Report water service-related emergencies to 919-560-1200 (after hours: 919-560-4344).

Last weekend's rain mostly missed our watersheds and didn't do anything to improve our lake levels. We remain in Stage 2 Water Shortage Response. Please use water wisely.

On an apt note, Thursday, October 15 is recognized as Imagine a Day Without Water. Durham Saves Water partnered with the City of Durham, NC Government's General Services Department to create artwork along Third Fork Creek Trail.

Stop by between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. this Thursday to check out the artwork and learn why we should all value water. Park in the parking lot at 1100 Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway.

Water Management sends our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Firefighter Andrew Brokes, as well as to our colleagues at the Durham Fire Department on the loss of a team member. We appreciate all of you, your commitment to Durham, and the dedication it takes to keep us all safe.

We are heartbroken to share that Firefighter Andrew Brokes died in the line of duty this morning while searching for victims inside the building at 410 Marly Drive.

Firefighter Brokes, who joined the Durham Fire Department on May 5, 2025, served the Durham community with dedication, courage, and a deep commitment to the residents of the Bull City.

“This is a heartbreaking loss for our department, the family, and the entire community,” said Durham Fire Chief Robert J. Zoldos II. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones and his colleagues, and we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during this unimaginably difficult time. The department is standing with and supporting his family in every possible way.”

Two other firefighters were injured during the incident and were taken to Duke Medical Center. Both have received care and are expected to make full recoveries.

This loss is felt across our entire department. Firefighters step into unpredictable situations every day in service to others, and Firefighter Brokes embodied that calling with honor.

We know our community is grieving alongside us. If you wish to share your condolences or messages of support, they will be received with gratitude by our department and by those who knew and loved Firefighter Brokes.

In the coming days, we will share more information about how we will honor his service and support the firefighters involved in this incident.

Thank you, Durham, for surrounding our DFD family with care during this profoundly difficult time.

Water Management Statement on Utility Billing Changes
As part of a citywide technology upgrade, the City of Durham’s utility billing system, including stormwater and solid waste billing, transitioned to a new platform at the beginning of September. While this upgrade will ultimately improve service and efficiency, the rollout has not gone as smoothly as we hoped.

We want our customers to know that we hear your concerns. Our team is actively working through the billing issues and schedule inconsistencies that have surfaced.

In the meantime, we have temporarily paused disconnections for non-payment and the application of late fees to ensure no customer is negatively affected while we resolve these challenges. We will make an announcement before we resume disconnections and late fees.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work diligently to fine tune the system and deliver the level of service you deserve.

Thank you,
Water Management

Atentamente,
Departamento de Gestión del Agua (Water Management)
