District Attorney Satana Deberry recently joined students at Wake Young Women's Leadership Academy for its annual International Day of the Girl celebration!

During her visit, DA Deberry spoke with students about her career, answered questions, and encouraged them to read widely and stay curious. 📚

From intern to ADA! 📈

We’re celebrating a full-circle moment at the Durham DA’s Office, as former intern Sloan Godbey was sworn in this morning as both a newly licensed attorney and our newest Assistant District Attorney.

Sloan earned a bachelor’s at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in just three years and a JD at North Carolina Central University School of Law, where she graduated summa cm laude. After two years of interning with our office, she now joins the District Court Team.

Congratulations, Sloan, and welcome back! 🎉

The Durham DA's Office joined the Durham Crisis Response Center and the Durham Police Department this morning to commemorate each North Carolinian lost to domestic violence in 2026.

Assistant District Attorney Monica Burnette took part in the reading of names, and members of the office wore purple to show support for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Join us in congratulating Gabrielle Lucero, who was sworn in today as Assistant District Attorney with the Durham DA’s Office.

Gabrielle will join the Homicide and Violent Crimes team after eight years with the U.S. Army JAG Corps, where she most recently prosecuted cases of sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse, and murder in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. She also earned her JD and MPP from Duke University.

Join us in congratulating Chelsea Ellis, who was sworn in today as Assistant District Attorney with the Durham DA’s Office.

Chelsea will join the drugs and property team after seven years as a prosecutor in North Carolina, most recently in Cumberland County. She is also a graduate of NCCU School of Law.
