This past week, Dyer County Mayor Eric Maupin visited Mrs. Tammy Ladd’s American Government and Civics class at Dyer County High School to discuss the responsibilities of the county mayor and the importance of understanding how government functions. 📚✏️📝
Mayor Maupin emphasized that the United States has a unique system of government in which authority originates from the people. He reminded students that voting is a fundamental responsibility and encouraged them to use their voice in every election once they turn eighteen. 🎓
He explained that, as county mayor, he serves as the chief financial officer for Dyer County. Decisions are not made unilaterally; instead, he works alongside twenty county commissioners, and any action requires a majority vote. This structure ensures that the interests of citizens are represented at every step.
Mayor Maupin also outlined the role of county government, which includes funding schools, maintaining county roads, and overseeing county buildings. He noted that several county officials—such as the sheriff, road superintendent, and clerks—are independently elected by the citizens and do not report directly to the mayor. This separation of authority strengthens accountability within local government. 💪🏻
He encouraged students to recognize that government evolves as society changes. đź’ˇLaws are updated, new policies are created, and public involvement plays a critical role in shaping those decisions. Whether addressing local matters or national issues, civic engagement remains essential.
Mayor Maupin concluded his talk with students with questions they might have. Even Mrs. Tammy had a few of her own! 👩🏼‍🏫 Mayor Maupin reminded students that they are the next generation of leaders. Their ideas, participation, and commitment to their community will help shape the future of Dyer County and the State of Tennessee. 🇺🇸
