What did 4-H look like in Kiowa County nearly 100 years ago?

It was a whole lot more than livestock and ribbons.

By 1931, Kiowa County had 270 youngsters in 29 different 4-H clubs. And in 1933, an estimated 700 people gathered near Prairie Queen School to watch 17 men compete in a corn-husking contest — complete with guns signaling the start and finish.

From the Depression and Dust Bowl to World War II and beyond, 4-H and Extension became part of the fabric of life in Kiowa County — teaching generations lessons that reached far beyond the fairgrounds.
