Eagle County Open Space and Natural Resources Acquiring, conserving, and managing landscapes in Eagle County, CO. for significant public benefits

The Open Space Department was created in 2011 to coordinate the county’s open space program, which is funded by a dedicated 1.5 mill levy tax on property approved by voters in 2002. The Open Space Fund collects approximately $4.5 million per year and can only be used for the purchase, acquisition or protection of open space. To be considered for potential open space acquisition, properties are evaluated on: 1) scenic landscapes and vistas; 2) regional heritage, agriculture and ranching; 3) wildlife, wildlife habitat and migration routes; 4) sensitive lands and environments; 5) physical and visual buffers; and 6) access to streams, rivers, public lands and dispersed recreation opportunities.

Out at Brush Creek Valley Ranch Open Space earlier this week our team is continuing long-term monitoring on a recent restoration plot aimed at boosting elk forage and habitat in a decadent sage community. In a project developed with Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), the project involved mastication, along with targeted treatments to manage invasive cheatgrass and hoary cress. We’re excited to track how the native plant community recovers to create a healthier, more complex habitat for local wildlife!

Heads up, Eagle County! Drought conditions are reducing natural food sources for bears and driving them into our communities.

We need your help to keep both our community and local wildlife safe by:
- Using bear-resistant trash cans and putting garbage out ONLY on the morning of pickup.
- Taking down bird feeders, keeping pet food indoors, and cleaning outdoor grills.
- Businesses: Ensure all waste is fully inside secured, bear-resistant dumpsters and never place food waste in recycling bins.

Do your part to keep bears in wild places (like this duo at Brush Creek Valley Open Space) and away from human attractants (like this one in a Gypsum neighborhood)!
