Last night, Chief Ruby had the opportunity to introduce Deputy Josh McKelvey to the Eagle City Council. Deputy McKelvey began his career in law enforcement in 2005 as a dispatcher with the Ada County Sheriff's Office (ACSO). Two years later he decided to work in the Ada County Jail as a detention deputy. During his time as a detention deputy, Deputy McKelvey enjoyed being a jail training officer, helping train the next generation of deputies. He worked as jail deputy until 2020, when he transferred to the Police Services Bureau to be a patrol deputy.

In 2022, Deputy McKelvey took on a position with the City of Kuna Police Department. In 2025, Deputy McKelvey was selected to be a part of the motor team with the ACSO, before transferring to Eagle to become part of the STEP (motor) team.

During this time, Deputy McKelvey also worked to become an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) instructor, in addition to serving as an impact weapons instructor. He is also a part of the off-road teams, specifically utilizing the UTV and off-road Motorcycles to help in the foothills with searches for people who may be lost or are in need of help.

Recently, Deputy McKelvey achieved his POST Master's certification.

Outside of work, Deputy McKelvey enjoys hiking and camping with his wife of 29 years and their two golden retrievers. He enjoys long-distance off-road outings on his adventure bike.

On September 7, 2026, at approximately 1:44 p.m., an Eagle Police STEP motor deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop on an electric motorcycle stopped in the middle of the roadway at W. Chinden Blvd. and N. Linder Rd. in Boise. The rider immediately sped off at a high rate of speed, driving recklessly and unsafely as deputies pursued him northbound on Linder Rd., then onto a canal road, before he continued through Eagle Island State Park, where deputies lost sight of him.

Additional Eagle Police and Ada County Sheriff's Office deputies quickly established a perimeter around Eagle Island State Park. After the perimeter was set, deputies saw him leave the park and head north on Hwy 44, driving through a neighborhood just east of Eagle High School. A bystander directed deputies to him. Through the course of the investigation, deputies determined the 17-year-old male was the rider of the electric motorcycle.

The juvenile was arrested on charges of {F} Fleeing & Eluding and {F} Concealing Evidence and booked into the Ada County Juvenile Detention Center. He was also issued multiple citations.

We would like to thank the Meridian Police Department - Idaho and the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation Eagle Island State Park Rangers for their assistance with this incident.

Edit: initial post labeled city of attempted traffic stop as Eagle. Corrected to Boise.
