🚶 CROSS SAFELY! Use sidewalks and crosswalks, look both ways, and avoid running between parked cars.

🕯️ SKIP THE FLAMES! Use battery-operated candles or LED lights in jack-o’-lanterns instead of open flames.

👻 COSTUME SAFETY! Choose flame-resistant costumes that fit properly and don’t obstruct vision.

🍬 CHECK THE TREATS! Parents and caregivers should inspect candy and treats before children enjoy them.

🏠 KEEP PATHWAYS CLEAR! Make sure walkways, steps, and entrances are well-lit and free of decorations that could cause trips or falls.

🚒🐾 HELPING OUR FOUR-LEGGED FAMILY MEMBERS BREATHE EASIER! 🐶❤️

The East Dundee & Countryside Fire Protection District would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to Christina and Matt from Invisible Fence® Brand's Project Breathe™, along with their four-legged companions, Benny and Blue, for stopping by our fire station today!

Through their generous support, our Fire District received FIVE pet oxygen mask kits that will be placed on our fire apparatus, providing our firefighters with another valuable tool to help save the lives of pets during emergencies.

🐾 WHAT IS PROJECT BREATHE?

Founded in 2006 by Invisible Fence® Brand, Project Breathe™ is a nationwide initiative dedicated to helping fire departments and first responders save pets suffering from smoke inhalation during fires and other emergencies.

Unlike traditional oxygen masks designed for humans, these specially designed masks fit over an animal's muzzle, allowing firefighters to administer supplemental oxygen to pets that have been exposed to smoke.

Through this incredible program, more than 27,000 pet oxygen masks have been donated to first responders, helping give countless four-legged family members a better chance of survival.

🚒 MORE THAN JUST A DONATION!

Christina and Matt didn't just drop off equipment. They also spent time educating our firefighters on the proper use and application of these specialized oxygen masks.

And, of course, Benny and Blue were the stars of the visit! 🐕🐾 Their participation helped make this a memorable and valuable learning experience for our crews.

❤️ BECAUSE PETS ARE FAMILY, TOO!

When firefighters respond to a house fire, protecting human life will always be our first priority. But we also recognize that pets are beloved members of the families we serve.

Having this specialized equipment available on our apparatus gives our personnel an additional resource to provide potentially lifesaving care to animals rescued from smoke-filled environments.

On behalf of the entire East Dundee & Countryside Fire Protection District, thank you to Christina, Matt, Benny, Blue, Invisible Fence® Brand, and Project Breathe™ for your generosity, your time, and your commitment to protecting our community's pets!

We hope we never have to use these masks, but thanks to your generosity, we'll be better prepared if the need arises.

🚒 A Special Thank You to Village President Dan Pearson!

The East Dundee & Countryside Fire Protection District would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the Village of East Dundee President, Dan Pearson, for his generous donation of personal carbon monoxide (CO) detectors for our emergency response vehicles.

These detectors will be a valuable addition to our crews' everyday safety equipment, providing an extra layer of protection on every emergency call.

Carbon monoxide is often called the “silent killer” because it is colorless, odorless, and potentially deadly. While our crews routinely respond to carbon monoxide emergencies, dangerous CO levels can also be present during calls where a leak is not initially suspected.

By carrying these personal detectors, our firefighters will have an additional early-warning tool to alert them to potentially hazardous carbon monoxide levels, helping protect our personnel and the residents we serve.

Thank you, President Pearson, for your generosity, continued support, and commitment to the safety and well-being of our firefighters and community!

🚒 Your support helps keep those who protect our community safe!

🔥 EDFD 2026: KNOW YOUR FIRE DISTRICT — WEEK 9 🔥
APPARATUS, EQUIPMENT & FIRE STATION MAINTENANCE.

When you see a fire engine or ambulance responding to an emergency, you're seeing just one part of a much larger operation.

Behind every response are specialized vehicles, medical equipment, firefighter protective gear, tools, and a fire station that must be maintained and ready for service.

🚒 OUR APPARATUS: MORE THAN JUST FIRE TRUCKS

The East Dundee Fire District operates a variety of emergency vehicles, including fire engines, ambulances, a water tender, a utility terrain vehicle (UTV), and a rescue boat.

Each serves a different purpose, and each requires regular inspections, maintenance, repairs, and eventual replacement.

As of 2026, the District's apparatus inventory includes an ambulance approximately 10 years old and a water tender approximately 21 years old.
Age alone doesn't determine when a vehicle must be replaced. Mechanical condition, maintenance history, reliability, repair costs, and operational needs all factor into replacement planning.

💰 THE COST OF EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT HAS CHANGED

The cost of purchasing and equipping emergency vehicles has increased significantly over the past decade.

Here are some approximate equipment cost comparisons:

🚒 Fire Engine
2016: $500,000 → 2026: $1,200,000
🚑 Ambulance
2016: $200,000 → 2026: $550,000
🧑‍🚒 Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)
2016: $5,000 → 2026: $15,000
❤️ Cardiac Monitor
2016: $25,000 → 2026: $65,000

These examples illustrate how the costs of emergency vehicles and essential equipment have changed. Actual purchasing costs depend on specifications, manufacturers, and equipment configurations.

🧰 FIREFIGHTER EQUIPMENT REQUIRES CONTINUOUS INVESTMENT

Firefighters depend on helmets, protective clothing, boots, breathing apparatus, radios, and specialized tools to perform their jobs.

Medical equipment also requires inspections, servicing, supplies, and replacement as technology and operational requirements change.

Maintaining this equipment is an ongoing responsibility, not simply a one-time purchase.

🏠 OUR FIRE STATION IS PART OF THE RESPONSE SYSTEM

The District operates from its fire station at 401 Dundee Avenue in East Dundee.
The building provides space for emergency vehicles, personnel, training, equipment storage, and daily operations.

Like any facility, the station requires ongoing maintenance and capital improvements.

One identified maintenance need involves the station's apparatus bay doors, which are an important part of getting emergency vehicles in and out of the building.

📊 PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

Emergency vehicles, medical equipment, firefighter protective gear, and station systems all have different maintenance needs and replacement schedules.
Capital planning helps the District evaluate these needs, prioritize projects, estimate future expenses, and determine how major purchases and repairs will be funded.

Apparatus, equipment, facilities, and personnel all work together to provide emergency services.

🚨 WHY DOES THIS MATTER?

Because responding to an emergency requires more than trained firefighters and paramedics.

It also requires the vehicles, equipment, and facilities needed to support their work.
Every response depends on people, equipment, and preparation.

Have questions about our apparatus, equipment costs, or fire station? Drop them in the comments!

🔥 EDFD 2026: KNOW YOUR FIRE DISTRICT — WEEK 8 🔥
STAFFING THE FIRE DISTRICT

When you call 911, apparatus and equipment are important — but trained people are what make the response possible.

East Dundee Fire District uses a combination staffing model to provide emergency services to our community. Over time, however, that model has changed.

👨‍🚒 THE WORKFORCE IS CHANGING

Like many fire districts, East Dundee has historically relied on part-time personnel as an important part of its staffing model. In recent years, declining interest and availability among part-time personnel have required the District to rely more heavily on full-time staffing to maintain a stable workforce.

That transition affects more than the number of people working at the station.

🚒 STAFFING = RESPONSE CAPABILITY

Every emergency requires personnel to fill specific roles. Fire engines, ambulances, tenders, boats and other specialized equipment can only respond when appropriately trained personnel are available to staff and operate them.

Firefighter/paramedics also need extensive training and certifications to perform the many different jobs required of them — from providing advanced life support and operating emergency vehicles to fighting fires and responding to specialized rescue incidents.

⏰ EMERGENCIES DON'T FOLLOW A SCHEDULE

As we showed during Week 7, through August 2026, the District was experiencing 21.2% more incidents than during the same period in 2025. More calls — especially when emergencies overlap — can place multiple crews and apparatus in service at the same time. 9-15-2026 Board Meeting Packet

When vacancies occur, or fewer part-time members are available, maintaining staffing may require schedule adjustments, overtime, or greater reliance on full-time personnel.

💰 INVESTING IN OUR PERSONNEL

Providing emergency services requires trained, qualified, and dependable personnel.

The East Dundee Fire District utilizes both full-time and part-time firefighter/paramedics to staff emergency operations. As part-time availability has changed over the years, the District has adjusted its staffing model to provide more consistent coverage and maintain operational readiness.

Personnel expenses include wages, benefits, training, certifications, and other employment-related costs. These are important components of the District's annual operating budget.

Whether full-time or part-time, every member plays an important role in providing emergency services to our community.

🤝 AND WE DON'T OPERATE ALONE

Automatic and mutual aid remain important parts of the emergency response system. Through August 2026, East Dundee recorded 589 aid responses given to neighboring departments and 381 received from neighboring departments. Aid works both ways and allows departments to share resources when incidents require additional assistance.

📍 WHY DOES STAFFING MATTER?

Because when the next call comes in, the question isn't simply whether the District owns an ambulance or fire engine.

The question is whether the trained personnel needed to put that equipment into service are available when the community needs them.

That's why staffing, training, scheduling, call volume, apparatus availability and operating costs are all connected.

People staff the apparatus. People provide the care. People answer the call.
Pride. Accountability. Professionalism.

🔥 EDFD 2026: KNOW YOUR FIRE DISTRICT — WEEK 7 WRAP-UP 🔥
UNDERSTANDING OUR CALL VOLUME

This week, we looked beyond total call volume to better explain what it means for your Fire District and the community we serve.

🚑 WHAT TYPES OF CALLS DO WE RESPOND TO?
Emergency medical calls make up a significant portion of our responses, but our crews also handle fires, hazardous situations, rescues, public service calls, alarms, and other requests for assistance. Through August 2026, the District recorded 719 medical incidents along with hundreds of other calls requiring District resources.

📈 HOW IS EMERGENCY DEMAND CHANGING?
Through August, the District responded to 1,592 incidents, averaging approximately 6.6 incidents per day and 199 calls per month. Call volume was 21.2% higher than the same period in 2025 and 27.1% higher than in 2024.

🕐 WHEN DO CALLS HAPPEN?
Emergency calls don't follow a schedule. Some days and months are busier than others. In 2026, monthly call volume has ranged from 162 incidents in April to 246 incidents in July through the end of August.

🚨 WHAT HAPPENS WHEN MULTIPLE CALLS OCCUR?
This is where call volume becomes more than a number. When crews and apparatus are already committed to an incident, another emergency can require the District to adjust available resources and determine what additional assistance is needed.

🤝 HOW DO AUTOMATIC AND MUTUAL AID FIT IN?
Automatic and mutual aid provide a system for neighboring agencies to assist when additional personnel, apparatus, or specialized resources are needed.
That is the bigger picture behind call volume.

It isn't simply how many times the phone rings. It's what the emergency is, when and where it happens, what resources are already committed, and what is available when the next call comes in.

Thank you for following along with Week 7 of Know Your Fire District. We’ll continue sharing information about your Fire District and the services it provides throughout the coming weeks.
