What has a veteran taught you about America? High school students are invited to explore this question through the VFW’s 2026–27 Voice of Democracy National Scholarship competition. This year’s theme, “What A Veteran Taught Me About America…”, challenges students to develop their own perspective through both writing and speaking. The Voice of Democracy is an audio-essay competition. Students write an essay based on the theme and submit a recording of themselves presenting it. Entries are due October 31, 2026 and should be submitted to our local partner, VFW Post 3054, 8 Jones Street, Setauket, NY 11733, or [email protected]. More information can be found at the VFW’s Youth & Education program.
Through our partnership with VFW Post 3054, these contests give our students an opportunity to share their voices, connect with the experiences of veterans, and have their work recognized beyond the classroom.
