Located in East Troy, WI, just 20 minutes from the resort area of Lake Geneva, WI, the East Troy Electric Railroad operates 10-mile round trip excursions from its historic depot and museum to the turn of the century-styled terminal at the renowned Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago, WI. The railroad and adjoining museum are home to over 20 rail treasures including open cars, locomotives, streetcars and interurban coaches. The railroad also operates the only electric interurban dining car train in North America recreating the luxury that patrons once enjoyed when life seemed to pass by a little slower. The East Troy Electric Railroad is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization run by volunteers committed to the operation and preservation of historic trolleys and interurban railcars. All proceeds and sales benefit the education and preservation work of this museum.

How It Was Wednesday!

👻 Have you heard of Phil M. Karnath, our ghost?

⚡️Phil was employed by The Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Company and was making repairs to the substation in East Troy (which is today the East Troy Depot) when he suffered an electrical shock. After a few days, he tragically passed away and, following a funeral, was buried in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, which our railroad continues to pass leaving East Troy.

🐈‍⬛ Recently we’ve witnessed a black cat standing near Phil’s grave at night before following our dinner trains back to the East Troy Depot. Will we see him this Saturday?

Behind the Scenes Sunday!

Our volunteers continue to work on the restoration of North Shore Line interurban car 162 in our Maintenance Facility, making great progress!

Our restoration team has replaced all 15 ceiling panels, and have begun work on the smoking section. All wood has been removed from the window posts, and work on the windows and doors has begun!

This truly ground-up restoration is only possible with our amazing team of volunteers and donors. Every screw turned and dollar in the donation box pushes this project forward. Dedicated volunteers of all generations and experience levels are working every day to get Car 162 one step closer to riding the rails again!

📅 This Day in History: October 21, 1907

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Lake Beulah was home to the Lake Beulah Hotel, a popular resort located on the eastern shore of the lake.

On October 21, 1907, The Milwaukee Electric Railway and Light Company opened its Beulah Lake stop along the interurban railway to East Troy. Visitors could ride the electric railway to the stop, then walk or take a carriage less than a mile to the hotel.

The hotel experienced its second fire in 1911 and was not rebuilt afterwards, but pieces of this history remain. You can still find the original brick steps and passing track from the former station along our railroad today. 🚎
