Stay Weather Aware This Weekend!

With concerns about the hurricane and possible severe weather, we encourage everyone to stay alert and monitor local weather updates throughout the weekend.

If you must be out, use caution and watch for fallen trees, debris, and flooded roads. Never drive around barricades or through floodwater.

Stay well away from downed power lines and anything touching them. Always assume they are energized, and keep children and pets away.

Stay safe and stay informed!

We’re always proud to have the opportunity to visit with our community’s youngest members! Our firefighters had a great time visiting Dodge County Primary School and teaching these little ones about fire safety, emergency preparedness, and the importance of having a plan.

Your clothes dryer may seem harmless, but lint buildup and blocked vents can become a serious fire hazard if they aren’t cleaned regularly.

The Eastman Fire Department Community Risk Reduction Program encourages everyone to take a few simple steps to help keep their home safe.

🧺 DRYER SAFETY TIPS

• Clean the lint filter after every load.

• Check behind and underneath the dryer for lint, dust, and clothing that may have fallen out of sight.

• Make sure the dryer vent hose is not crushed, kinked, or blocked.

• Keep the outside dryer vent clear of lint, leaves, nests, and other debris.

• Have the full dryer vent line inspected and cleaned regularly, especially if it has a long run to the outside.

• Never run the dryer when you are asleep or away from home.

• Keep flammable items such as cardboard, cleaning supplies, and clothing away from the dryer.

• Make sure your dryer is properly installed and plugged into the correct electrical outlet.

• If clothes are taking longer than normal to dry, the dryer feels unusually hot, or you notice a burning smell, stop using it and have it checked.

⚠️ A clogged dryer vent can cause heat to build up inside the appliance and ductwork. Taking a few minutes to clean and inspect your dryer can help prevent a fire before it starts.

The Eastman Fire Department is proud to recognize Child Passenger Safety Week and remind parents and caregivers how important it is to make sure every child is properly secured every time they ride in a vehicle.

✅ Use the correct car seat or booster seat for your child’s age, height, and weight.

✅ Make sure the seat is installed correctly and securely.

✅ Keep children rear-facing for as long as their car seat allows.

✅ Use booster seats until the seat belt fits properly.

✅ Children should ride in the back seat whenever appropriate.

✅ Always buckle up — every trip, every time.

Even a short drive can become dangerous in a matter of seconds. Taking a few extra moments to properly secure your child can make a life-saving difference.

On Saturday, September 19, 2026, at approximately 7:44 PM, the Eastman Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire on Ben Giddens Road, with one person reported to still be inside the residence.

Upon arrival, Eastman firefighters entered the home, located Ms. Sally Payne, and successfully removed her from the structure. She was then transferred to Dodge County EMS for further evaluation and patient care. One day later, she passed away due to smoke inhalation complicated by health issues related to hospice care, according to the Dodge County Coroner.

The City of Eastman extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Ms. Payne following their tragic loss.

The incident was turned over to the Georgia State Fire Marshal’s Office for further investigation.

We ask that the privacy of Ms. Payne’s family be respected during this difficult time.
