Public Service Reminder.
Our officers sent us notice of an incident that happened inside a Wawa.

04/19/2024

PMFD has responded to multiple fires caused by spontaneous combustion of oily rags over the past few years. This morning we responded to yet another fire resulting in improper disposal of oily rags. Thankfully this event was limited to loss of garbage cans.

We wanted to remind everyone that oil paints, stains, varnishes, and turpentine release heat as the rag dries. Oil soaked rags packed closely together, or thrown into a pile, can smolder and ignite a fire.

It is recommended to dry oil soaked rags outside by laying flat on the ground or noncombustible surface. Once dry, place into a metal container with water and a tight fitting lid.

And as always, follow manufacturer specifications and warning labels found on the products container.

Did You Know?

Building Permits Need to be Acquired BEFORE You Start.
By definition, a Permit needs to be acquired before you start the building process. While there are certainly processes for getting your project up-to-code if you didn’t have a permit before building, these are much more of a hassle and may require a full reconstruction of your project.

Permits Are Not Just a Formality
Depending on the nature of your project, permits are an important tool for ensuring you and your family can enjoy your space safely. An improperly installed deck, for example, could collapse or could be a serious fire hazard. If your deck does cause an accident and was not permitted, you could be legally liable for injuries or damages. Permits are the best way to ensure that your project is Code Compliant and to avoid unnecessary expenses / hassles down the road.

Please call Palmer Township Permits and Codes Department with any Permit questions at 610-253-7191 ext. 1112.
