Do you know the history of the popular roadway, Sullivan Trail?? Unearth more of Easton's Story at the Marx Room!

If you’re familiar with driving in and around the Easton area, at one time or another, you may have driven a particular roadway and passed by a historical marker commemorating a specific historical campaign. The roadway is known as Sullivan Trail. In Pennsylvania, there are a total of 60 historical markers related to the Sullivan Campaign.

In 1779, Commander-in-Chief George Washington ordered Major General John Sullivan to raise an army to protect Americans against Tory and Indian attacks. No road existed over the Pocono Mountains to transport an army, so 500 men created the crude roadway between May and June 1779. The Sullivan Campaign started in Easton, PA, on June 18, 1779, and continued on to the Genesee Valley of New York. The campaign ended back in Easton, PA, in October of 1779.

This marker is at the top of College Hill on Knox Avenue (Sullivan Trail).
