What does it mean to belong?

In this reading and conversation, five writers explore the rich terrain of belonging. An emigré reinvents himself, a woman with blindness confronts what it means to see and be seen, a career man adjusts to a quieter life, a woman finds a place for herself while caring for nature, and young girls learn to be true to themselves. Moderated by Jill McCabe Johnson.

A BETTER WORLD IS POSSIBLE.

What does it take to imagine a better future—and what can the next generation teach us about making it happen?

Join award-winning journalist Meera Subramanian and beloved poet and author Maleea Acker for an inspiring conversation about our changing planet, the power of young voices, and the places we call home.

Meera’s new graphic nonfiction book, A Better World Is Possible: Global Youth Confront the Climate Crisis, illustrated by Danica Novgorodoff, follows four young activists taking action to shape the future. Bestselling author John Green calls it “an urgent, helpful, and hopeful portrait of what’s possible.”

Maleea is the author of Gardens Aflame, an exploration of the endangered Garry oak meadows of the Salish Sea, their Indigenous stewardship, and the people working to restore them—including here in the San Juan Islands.

Together, they’ll answer your questions and explore the possibility of meaningful change.

And a little something to take home: Every guest will receive a poem by Maleea Acker.

What stories can a mountain range tell?

On Wednesday, October 7 at 6:00 p.m., the Orcas Island Public Library welcomes award-winning author and naturalist David B. Williams for a special conversation about his book, In the Range of Fire and Ice: A Human and Natural History of Washington’s Cascades. Williams will be joined in conversation by Amy Frost, Executive Director of the Lopez Island Historical Society.

Blending human and natural history, In the Range of Fire and Ice offers a fascinating portrait of one of North America’s most dynamic landscapes. From glaciers and volcanoes to forests, wildlife, and the people who have called the region home, Williams explores the forces that have shaped the Cascades—and continue to transform them today.
