Eaton Fire Department is selling red reflective custom 911 signs for $20 each. These signs will aid us in easily identifying your home in the event of an emergency, help us help you. We made a post a few months ago and we’re happy to say they were a hit, so we’ve restocked. The signs pictured below are printed vertically however, we can print them horizontally as well. If interested please email 1st Assistant Chief Chad Chapman [email protected]

Ever wondered what it actually takes to fight a house fire here in our community? 🚒🔥
It’s a lot more than just showing up and spraying water….Just recently, we faced the frustrating reality of struggling to appropriately staff one of our trucks when the community needed us.
In the fire service, we abide by a safety rule called "2-In, 2-Out." Here is how it applies for a “typical” house fire, and why YOUR community needs you:
The Bare Minimum:
Before anyone can step foot inside a burning building, safety laws require a minimum of 4 personnel on scene.
* 2 Inside: One on the nozzle, one helping navigate the hose through the building.
* 2 Outside: Two dedicated standby rescue members.
While 4 people can start the attack, a house fire moves incredibly fast, national standards recommend roughly 14 firefighters minimum to handle multiple critical jobs at the exact same time:
* Pump Operator (1)
* Fire Attack & Backup (5)
* Search & Rescue (2)
* Ventilation (2)
* Rapid intervention Team (2)
* Command (2)
Here’s the reality:
If we only have a total membership of roughly 10-15 regularly participating volunteers, the chance of getting even 4 of those members to any given call in a timely manner is slim. More members = higher likelihood someone is available to take a call. Sadly, 10-15 members is the reality for many volunteer departments across New York State and the rest of the US.
And that is where you come in.
You don't need prior experience to join us—we send you to training and provide gear, all free of charge. Plus, you don't necessarily have to go inside. We need pump operator/Drivers, scene support, EMTs ,and administrative help. Every single role on that list is vital to providing the high quality service our community deserves. Help us help our community.
If you live in the town of Eaton and are interested, Stop by the station any Wednesday night at 7:00pm, we can help get you started. If you’re not in Eaton please contact your local Fire Department.

FYSA:
It has recently come to this departments attention that we are entering an age defined by social media. With that being said we have made the decision to attempt to be more active in our efforts in social media. For us what that looks like is posting not only about special events such as our annual chicken BBQ but also giving a more inside look at your local department(equipment, station, possibly membership with their permission), fire safety education, and also explanations on how we as a department operate during different emergency situations. We also would like to hear feedback from the community as far as what kinds of things you would like see from our social media. If you have any Ideas or suggestions on what you would like to see feel free to comment below.

Tomorrow marks the 25th anniversary of one of the Darkest Days in American history, 9/11. We at Eaton Fire Department, first and foremost would like to send our condolences continued prayers for all those who were affected or lost their lives, and the friends and families they left behind that day.
Secondly, as it is the 25th anniversary, we are aware that it has been some time and recognize there are those among us who either were too young to remember, or were not born at a time when the events were at the forefront of our memories. This being said, if you will take the time, here is a brief summary of the timeline of that day and the toll it took on our nation.

Between 5:45am and 8:42am: 4 planes were high jacked. these included American Airlines Flights 11, and 77. As well as United Airlines flights 175 and 93

8:46am: Flight 11 crashes into the north tower of the World Trade Center

8:50: FDNY battalion 1 Chief assumes command at the base of the north tower

9:03am: Flight 175 crashes into the South tower of the World Trade Center

9:29am: FDNY issues a 100% recall on all off-duty firefighters in the City

9:37am: In Washington, Flight 77 crashes into the Pentagon

9:59am: The south tower collapses. Nobody still inside the Tower survives the collapse. The collapse produces 2.1 magnitude seismic waves.

10:03am: Flight 93 crashes 80 miles southeast of Pittsburgh in a field in Shanksville Pennsylvania, after the passengers on board overtook and forced the hijacker’s to cash the plane. The intended target of Flight 93 is unknown but is assumed to be the White House.

10:28am: The North tower collapses taking with it the Marriott hotel located at the base of the towers. 16 individuals inside the north tower would survive and later be rescued. This collapse severely damages the South side of building 7 of the World Trade Center and sets the base of the building on fire.

7:20pm: 7 World Trade Center collapses. Given the time between the time the North Tower collapsed and 7WTC collapsed, members of the FDNY were able to ensure the building was evacuated prior to its collapse.

The Total death toll of that day was 2,977. Broken down further: 2,606 died at the World Trade Center, 125 died at the pentagon including 55 military service members, all 44 people on board flight 93 died (this excludes the hijackers).
The first responder death toll by agency is as follows:
FDNY: 343 (340 firefighters, 2 paramedics, 1 Chaplain)
NYPD: 23 police officers
Port Authority: 37 port authority officers

9/11 stands as the largest single day loss of life for any fire department worldwide. Today the death toll continues to grow among first responders and those impacted by the attacks via long term respiratory diseases and cancer.
