🌊🔬 Science Club in Action! 🐛💧

On Wednesday, October 14, students from Mrs. Mettler and Mrs. Backlund’s Science Club headed to Smallwood Park on the Mashel River for hands-on water quality testing!

Students tested dissolved oxygen, turbidity, nitrates, pH, and water temperature to help monitor the health of the Nisqually River watershed. We were also joined by Julia from the Nisqually River Education Project, who helped students discover and identify aquatic benthic macroinvertebrates, including stoneflies, mayflies, and other fascinating river critters!

🌱 By collecting real-world data and exploring life beneath the water’s surface, our students are learning how science helps us understand, protect, and care for our local waterways.

Real science. Local impact. Future environmental stewards! 💚🌎

On October 2, our STRIVE class took a field trip to The Sweet Spot in Roy, WA! Throughout September, our Life Skills lessons focused on nutrition, baking, and cooking. During the field trip, students put those skills into practice by selecting a meal from the menu that included adequate protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Students also worked together to make freeze-dried candy from start to finish. It was a great opportunity to practice teamwork, communication, decision-making, and following directions while having a lot of fun along the way!

A huge thank you to The Sweet Spot for welcoming our students and giving them such a hands-on and memorable experience!
