While he remains a fixture in the local music scenes – routinely producing for celebrated regional talent – Shane Leonard is stepping into a new sonic chapter. With the support of Sleepy Cat Records, the prolific producer and songwriter has unveiled his latest LP, Make the Birds Fly.

Having shaped records for artists including — but not limited to — Sophia Ammann, Humbird, Courtney Hartman and J.E. Sunde, Leonard has turned helping other voices take flight into an art form. His keen ear for sound will once again return to his own music, with the new record slated for release in February 2027.

It took close to a decade of dissection, he shared, to arrive at 10 tracks which are sure to “float, swerve, dart and surprise.”

“My premise has always been (that) this is a story about humanity, it’s a story about all of us,” Pao Lor, Wisconsin educator and author, said of his latest memoir, Bamboo Son.

With many voices and lived experiences converging in Eau Claire for the Chippewa Valley Book Festival from Oct. 19-24, two new sessions draw attention to the narratives and cultural heritage of the local Hmong community.

Celebrated Midwest writers Lor and V.T. Bidania will offer independent windows into the nuances of those who have a Hmong American identity.

“While my main characters are usually Hmong or Hmong American, I want their stories to represent their individual, unique journeys and experiences,” Bidania said. “Hmong people are so much more than their refugee background.

“I hope my books will present not the usual war or refugee stories so often written about us, but human stories,” she said.

This time last year, local Katherine Lillie was in the early stages of launching what has become Icon Realty. Since the brokerage’s founding, the community continues to be top of mind.

Katherine — alongside fellow agents Ryan Steines and Taylor Weiss and Operations Manager Rebekah Hershman — is challenging a misconception in the real estate industry and professional settings: it’s okay that decisions come down to the vibe.

“I think the word ‘vibe’ is easily discredited,” Katherine said. “(In) real estate, there’s transactional numbers and investments … (each) of those are important. But there’s also another side to it.

“If you are going to purchase a home and you know your numbers, then from there it’s the vibe of the house (that determines) ‘can I live here,’ ” she continued.

When asked how these authentic choices translate to success stories throughout the Chippewa Valley, Katherine said her “triangle of trust” — when realtor, lender and client work together — helps ensure trust flourishes and personalized visions become reality.

Surrounding the Seven Mile Creek Landfill in Eau Claire county, a lush scene of oak, aspen and pine forest stretches across the landscape. This natural setting wraps around the facility that could soon be transformed if a potential expansion moves forward.

The roughly 80-acre landfill, which was purchased by Green For Life (GFL Environmental), a Canadian-based company, in 2020, currently sits approximately .05 miles from the Eau Claire River. Adjacent to residents who live in the town of Seymour, this area features a mixed biome of forest and lowland river wetlands.

A proposed expansion plan outlined by GFL spans 120 acres total, incorporating an 88-acre parcel which would require withdrawal from county forest territory.

Any sale would have to be recommended by the Eau Claire County Parks and Forest Citizen Advisory Committee, then County administrators, then brought to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

GFL's expansion proposal has yet to be formally submitted, yet one question is top of mind for many: Is expanding the landfill at this location in the public's best interest?

Country music fans can look forward to acclaimed stars Luke Bryan and Blake Shelton — with their catalog of top-charting hits — at next year's Country Jam USA music festival. Organizers have planned a weekend packed with electric and eclectic entertainment from July 22-24, 2027, at the Eau Claire Event District.

On Oct. 16, Country Jam Events and Marketing Consultant Benny Anderson shared the complete lineup for next summer's three-day country music festival in Eau Claire. This year's roster shines a light on "country icons, 90s legends and chart-topping trailblazers."

"With heavy hitters like Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan alongside an incredible depth of supporting talent across all three days, 2027 is shaping up to be one of our most unforgettable years yet," Anderson said.

For about eight years, Startup Chippewa Valley Week was the largest annual entrepreneurship event in the region, coinciding with the statewide Startup Wisconsin initiative. For the first time in a decade, the latter is taking a pause — but locals can still get an entrepreneurial jumpstart come November.

The Eau Claire Economic Development Corporation (EDC) may not be hosting a full week’s worth of events, but it will pack five events and activities into one day as part of the first-time Chippewa Valley Startup Day on Nov. 5.

“Most entrepreneurs are great at what they originally set out to do,” said Luke Hanson, executive director of the Eau Claire EDC. “But thinking they would also be an expert in accounting, patent law, foreign markets, online retail and so on is really tough to come by.

“That is where the EDC steps in, to make those connections and get the help the entrepreneur really needs in order to succeed."

About a year ago, the City of Eau Claire projected a $2 million deficit in its 2027 operating budget. Since then, staff have worked to close that gap – and have now balanced the proposed budget.

The operating budget document is split into 13 sections and is available to view online. It has been presented to City Council for potential edits and, before November ends, approval.

Among the proposed budget changes – which includes some fiscal rearranging and cuts – is the City’s decision to leave 10 currently vacant positions unfilled, to save on payroll expenditures.

The biggest slice of money goes toward the General Fund (which pays for services like police and fire protection, street repairs, park maintenance and more). The General Fund "expenses" (top pie chart) and "revenues" (lower pie chart) are shown in this photo.

Tomorrow, Oct. 20, City Manager Dave Solberg and Finance Director Kitzie Winters will hold a public presentation of the proposed document at the L.E. Phillips Senior Center. There, they will seek community feedback and can answer questions.

Maybe you saw it coming, but it's about damn time we address the cold foam coffee craze sweeping through Chippewa Valley cafes — from large chains to mom-and-pop shops.

Cold foam, a light and airy milk- or cream-based topping now rests atop dozens of specialty coffee drinks from businesses small and large. Local businesses across the Chippewa Valley — including Whirlybird Coffee Co., Hiker Coffee, Legacy Coffee and CHAO eatery — have embraced the trend with its matchas, lattes and more.

Over recent weekends, a quick stroll around downtown Eau Claire and Water Street revealed even more local coffee spots leaning into the trend.

If there’s one rule local loan officer Morgan Franks lives by, it’s that success remains a team effort. She’s brought Union Home Mortgage Corp. to the city she calls home, thanks to genuine relationships with local real estate agents.

Post graduation, she found herself as the director of operations at a local real estate company. It was here she realized the value of collaboration with industry pros — rather than competing against them. As fate would have it, this is where her vocation in mortgage lending took flight.

“I knew I wanted to stay in real estate. I wanted to work with all these people that I formed relationships with,” Morgan said. “I knew that if I was going to take a bet on myself — now was the time to do it.

“This community pours into our cup and we have to pour back into their cup as well,” Morgan said.
